I’m tired of the stigma that teachers can’t cross over into corporate. So, I’m going to start a new weekly post that highlights why you should hire teachers. Did you know that teachers, on average, make 1500 decisions a day? That comes out to 4 decision every minute. In the corporate world, the ability to make frequent, rapid decisions mirrors the decision-making process in education. Just as teachers must quickly adapt to the needs of their students throughout the day, corporate professionals must respond dynamically to changing business conditions, client demands, and team challenges. 3 attributes (aspiring) Directors of Education need to have: 1 - They need to be someone who can bring in specific expertise on quality of education, school improvement and teaching and learning. 2 - They've got to be a reformer. Everything's on the table. Everything is up for optimisation and review. You need to be the lead on that. What’s got us this far does not necessarily guarantee is still fit for purpose, so everything is up for review. 3 - If you're going to be the expert coming in and telling people about a different way of working and reforming the way they work, you need to have the skills to motivate them to understand the vision of where we're going and what you're trying to do, in terms of optimising and upgrading the day-to-day diet that every single student in this trust has access to. For transitioning teachers… Teaching children and adolescents is a lot like working with college kids, except with 1000x more legal requirements, ramifications and stressors. For hiring managers and recruiters… If you are interviewing a transitioning teacher, consider the fact that those candidates likely have more experience than anyone at your company mitigating and assessing risk, project managing to limit even the near appearance of impropriety, and, simultaneously, actually caring about stakeholders (students and their families.)
