Don't hire me to sell your home. Don't hire a residential broker to sell your commercial property. Sure, there are some similarities between the job functions. But that likes saying a semi-truck driver and a Formula 1 driver could switch roles. Similar job functions, totally different skill sets required. Use a commercial broker specific to your asset type or you will leave money on the table.

As I have mentioned in previous posts, I left Ram Partners back in November of last year after almost nine years of employment. I often mentioned that Ram had been good to me providing opportunities for me to grow within the company. The fact of the matter is that I excelled beginning with a lead concierge position leading to a leasing consultant opportunity. I left in frustration after being reassigned to a takeover property that came with a long commute and a myriad of problems that you would not have anticipated with a leading property management company. I have been very selective with my job approach responding to companies that have reached out to me rather than simply applying to a number of positions online. I recently applied to a leasing consultant position in Stone Mountain (that's where I live) and received an email telling me if I am interested to go online to take a test which supposedly determines my customer service skills. What has the hiring process become? Companies/hiring managers are increasingly lazy. Take five minutes to review the resume and if one reveals 270 five-star Google Business reviews, look at a reasonable sample, after all 270 folks cannot be mistaken In my nine years in the industry, I have worked with exceptional and average leasing consultants. The former being the exception to the rule. If you want to hire someone exceptional, read the resume and look at the reviews. No phone, video, online tests will be considered. Just old fashion look-in-the-eye honest discussions.

From Corvette Hunts to Cross-Continental Deliveries: Life as an Executive Assistant Who doesn’t love a good story, especially during a job interview? Lucky for me, I’ve got plenty! While I can’t share them all, here’s one that stands out: Working as an EA at an American company, I managed my fair share of routine tasks. But every once in a while, a request would come along that had me thinking, how did I get here? One day, my CEO hit me with this: “Kate, my friend in Europe wants a red 2021 Chevrolet Corvette, convertible, black wheels, white leather seats. Can you find one within budget, get it to the Miami port, handle the paperwork, shipping, and customs? Oh, and make sure it’s in Europe in 2 months.” Naturally, I said, “Yes!”—even though my brain was screaming, “No! Limited-edition car? Shipping overseas? You don’t know the first thing about this!” Two weeks later, after countless calls to dealerships up and down the South Coast (I think some of them knew my voice by then), I finally tracked down not one, but two cars that matched the specs. And then—surprise! U.S. law doesn’t allow brand-new cars to be exported without paying extra customs duties (because why make things easy, right?). So, I shifted gears (pun intended) and started hunting for a low-mileage, slightly-used Corvette. Back to square one! But it felt like a hunt, and I was determined to win. One week later, mission accomplished. The car made it to Europe ahead of schedule, complete with a big red bow. What’s the point of this story? Being an EA means handling a wildly diverse range of tasks. Some are routine, others are curveballs, but each teaches you something new. You gain skills that apply in any situation—whether it’s managing business operations or, apparently, international car deliveries. Why share this? To highlight just how varied the EA role is. You’re not just handling schedules—you’re doing everything from event planning to navigating customs regulations. You gain a broad business perspective that many roles don’t offer. And for those curious, I’ll save the story about delivering two luxury bicycles across the U.S. for another time. Let’s just say, it was far from efficient—but it sure was memorable. Working as a Specialty Leasing Manager has afforded me the opportunity to connect and work one on one with individuals looking to turn their dreams of owning a business into a reality. Some already have a business and maybe looking to level up, or sometimes explore a new concept. The retail world has presented its fair share of struggles and shakeups, but there has been some big wins out there too. Throughout my many years in various roles my observations have remained consistent, you can not place a value on outstanding consumer experience. It always starts with excellent customer service, but what drives it home is what comes next. The “little extras” always win. This can range from anything like unique packaging, exceptional merchandising, a rewarding loyalty program, or simply a little something special to say thank you. I share this with you because today, a day before a big holiday, I needed some things from the grocery store. I decided I would avoid the crowds and do an online pickup order at Wegmans. It was ready when I left work to pick up. I drove up and less than 5 minutes my bags were in my car. As I unpacked my packages, I found a thank you note and a bar of chocolate, which was for placing my first pick up order. It was the “little extra” that said “hey, we appreciate our customers.” The entire experience was easy, effortless, and ultimately pleasant. I encourage anyone who owns a business, big or small, pay attention to the consumer experience and to invest in the “little extras.” This will help your business win!
