I am thrilled to share that my first paper as part of my PhD journey has been published! 📚✨ This paper, titled "Stability of R-phycoerythrin from Furcellaria lumbricalis – Dependence on purification strategies and purity", explores how the thermal and pH stability of R-PE purified from F. lumbricalis was affected by three different purification strategies: microfiltration, ultrafiltration and multi-step ammonium sulphate precipitation. The stability of R-PE from F. lumbricalis has not been investigated earlier. Additionally, the effect of different purification methods such as membrane filtration, ammonium sulphate precipitation neither individually nor in combination has not been investigated on the stability of the colorant from red seaweed, particularly in F. lumbricalis. 🔍 Key findings: 1. Significant interaction between physiochemical factors and purification methods of R-PE. 2. Thermal stability of R-PE was observed till 40 °C in different purification strategies. 3. pH stability of R-PE was observed from pH 4 to 10 after microfiltration. 4. R-PE purified by multi-step ammonium sulphate precipitation showed higher stability than other purification strategies. I'm happy to finally unveil my last academic effort! 👨🏼🔬 In my publication in Food Research International, titled "Oil structuring using whey protein-based cryogel particles: Effect of gelation pH and feasibility as an ingredient in low-saturated fat cocoa spreads", we showed how by tuning gel preparation and drying techniques, we were able to steer whey protein isolate structure from particles with low ability to interact with oil, to particles with enhanced capabilities to physically entrap liquid oil and create a network that can help us to formulate a low-saturated fat cocoa spread. 🍫 Maybe in the future, a palm oil-free Nutella will hit the shelf with this technology. 🤔. Kudos to graduate student, Ben Weiss, for publishing the first chapter that will be in his MS thesis! His focus is evaluating hydromulches in small fruit systems - interesting work for sure and hopefully it contributes to developing biobased mulch options for farmers. The concerns articulated by the Hon’ble Union Minister of Agriculture at the 13th National Seed Congress in Varanasi are both profound and undeniably accurate. It is disheartening to observe that, under the guise of agricultural research, the entire National Agricultural Research System (NARS) appears to have transformed into little more than an agri-tourism enterprise. Modern researchers seem to have gravitated towards plant biotechnology, prioritizing the ‘ease of working’ it offers, while largely neglecting the unparalleled contributions of classical breeding—a discipline championed by visionaries like Dr. Yuan Longping, Dr. TT Chang, Dr. N Borlaug, Dr. MS Swaminthan and others, whose groundbreaking work revolutionized global rice and wheat production. Having had the privilege of serving both ICAR and CGIAR as a conventional plant breeder and seed systems specialist, I am deeply convinced that merely adopting trendy approaches like gene editing in plant variety development will do little to address the enduring struggles of farmers in environmentally vulnerable regions. The plight of these farmers, caught in the relentless cycle of hardship, remains unaltered through generations, demanding a far more holistic and empathetic approach to agricultural innovation. #NSRIFellow Dr. Edgar Cahoon, biochemist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has been named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors. Cahoon, George Holmes Professor of biochemistry and director of the university’s Center for Plant Science Innovation, is one of 170 new NAI fellows announced Dec. 10. Fellow status recognizes academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in developing inventions that have tangibly impacted quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society. Cahoon, an internationally recognized expert in plant lipid biotechnology, focuses his work on developing new types of oils that have improved functionalities for food, feed and industrial uses. His research to identify new genes, fatty acid structures and biochemical pathways in plants has generated 36 U.S. patents and improved crops’ nutritional and industrial value and agronomic performance. Cahoon said his success in translating discoveries to the marketplace reflects the university’s culture of innovation. “Our Center for Plant Science Innovation and our university has this philosophy of doing great science to make new discoveries and thinking about how we can apply those discoveries to benefit agriculture and society.
