The WMO report on Africa's environmental hazards—the top 3 (floods, droughts, and rising temperatures)—paints a dire picture, but it’s important to recognize that these challenges are deeply connected to the continent's broader socio-political issues. Africa's failed political systems, widespread corruption, and ongoing civil wars in many countries, such as Sudan, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo also many others, are aggravating these environmental threats and undermining efforts to ensure food security. Floods, for instance, often turn into disasters because governments lack the capacity or will to invest in proper infrastructure, such as drainage systems or flood defenses. Corruption frequently diverts funds meant for climate adaptation projects, leaving communities defenseless against natural disasters. Droughts are made worse by poor land management practices and inadequate support for sustainable farming, often because the ruling elites are more focused on maintaining power than addressing the needs of their populations. Rising temperatures, which exacerbate both floods and droughts, are often neglected due to a lack of political will, as governments prioritize short-term political gains over long-term climate strategies. The interconnected nature of these hazards and political failings creates a vicious cycle that further destabilizes food security. For example, civil conflicts in countries like Ethiopia and Somalia disrupt farming activities, displace communities, and destroy essential infrastructure, making it nearly impossible to respond effectively to climate shocks. Moreover, in regions where there is minimal concern or effort to solve these problems, such as in Zimbabwe or Chad, climate-related disasters compound existing poverty and food insecurity, pushing vulnerable populations further into crisis. To break this cycle, African leaders and international partners must not only address environmental hazards but also tackle the underlying political dysfunctions. This includes fostering transparency, reducing corruption, ending conflicts, and genuinely prioritizing climate resilience and food security as urgent, interconnected issues that require immediate action. Without such a comprehensive approach, any effort to mitigate these hazards will remain ineffective, and the continent’s food security will continue to deteriorate.

Is the glass of progress of #socialprotection in the #Arab region - for instance in terms of coverage extension - half full or half empty? As always, it depends on the perspective: some notable progress in the wider region’s (lower) middle income countries - interestingly also vis-a-vis other regions’ MICs - and more advancements in terms of #socialassistance as compared to #socialinsurance, despite decent economic growth in a number of countries… Rich and multifaceted discussion on these and other aspects during the final episode of the ‘Arab Social Protection Compass’ webinar, arranged by the International Labour Organization & the International Social Security Association, facilitated by socialprotection.org.
