"For cybersecurity investors rattled by a year filled with valuation haircuts for high-priced cybersecurity companies, Thursday offered a glimmer of hope that home-run deals are still possible in the sector. Mastercard announced that it will acquire threat intelligence startup Recorded Future for $2.65 billion from private equity and venture capital firm Insight Partners. Insight had acquired it for $780 million in 2019, notching a 3.3 times return on investment for the private equity firm" ... "Recorded Future’s revenue has grown from $140 million in 2020 to roughly $350 million today, according to the startup" ... "Founder and CEO Christopher Ahlberg has repeatedly described Recorded Future as 'the Bloomberg of cyber'—in other words, a reliable source of up-to-date information about cyberthreats, that data companies and governments pay top dollar for.  To provide that service, Recorded Future uses artificial intelligence models to scrape data from the internet and identify security threats. Mastercard says buying Recorded Future will help it win new customers, 'including those in new verticals,' implying it wants to build out its enterprise security business. But something else sets Recorded Future apart from other cybersecurity startups with unicorn valuations: It never raised much money. In the 10 years between its 2009 founding and its 2019 acquisition by Insight, Recorded Future raised just $56 million. And the startup had strong revenue and healthy profit margins early on, according to Insight managing director Thomas Krane, who told us he had been trying to invest in the startup for years before Ahlberg agreed to take Insight’s first investment in 2017." ... “'Over the past few years, there was this idea that more equals better, and you can just burn your way through and that’s how you win a market,' Krane said. 'Recorded Future took a more pragmatic approach of honing its product market fit and doubling down on that, and it’s a great example of how that model can be successful.'" ... "To do so, Insight Partners devoted a team of more than 130 people to building out Recorded Future’s sales and marketing, and advised it on executive hiring, according to Krane. Recorded Future’s customers now include agencies like U.S. Cyber Command and more than 44 foreign governments, the company said." ... “'With Recorded Future, we used to joke that everyone from government customers to Porta-Potti companies have a reason to buy our product,” Krane said. “The addressable market is huge and superwide; that’s the nice thing about security.'"

Key takeaways: -Public market performance for infosec companies has not continued to elevate unicorn valuations. Infosec lagged our Unicorn Industry Vertical Indexes in Q1 2024, contributing the only decline among the verticals. -VC exits maintained low volumes, yet outliers demonstrated that emerging trends can yield high-end outcomes for specialist early-stage investors. Acquisitions of Avalor by Zscaler and Gem by Wiz both reached $350.0 million with high multiples on invested capital (MOIC), continuing the theme of $250 million to $350 million acquisitions of early-stage companies over the past two quarters. -Recently enhanced cloud security visibility requires more advanced threat hunting and remediation solutions to improve security outcomes in this high-growth category.

Big news out of Abnormal Security today as we announce our Series D funding, led by Wellington Management, and $200M in ARR. This is a moment of celebration, and for me, also one for reflection. When I joined Abnormal in 2021, we had single-digits ARR and a big idea for what email security could be. The marketing team was just starting to fully form, and AI wasn't even a buzzword yet. Times have certainly changed. The last three years have been extraordinary, both from a company and an individual growth perspective. Having the opportunity to lead content and communications at a record-breaking company like this has been incredible. It's been challenging, and exciting, and so much fun. I've laughed and I've cried, ad I've learned so much along the way. We've built an amazing team of marketers, and we're creating an innovative brand that people both recognize and love. As we start Black Hat today, I couldn't be more proud of what we've accomplished. Today we're celebrating our Series D, but we're also celebrating all the customers, partners, investors, and employees who have helped us reach this milestone. My friend and partner Konstantin Chigirev has recently challenged IPO (Initial Public Offering) as a golden milestone for cybersecurity companies. Today I want to build up on that by looking at IPOs from a positive angle. Let's discuss 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜. As the tech IPOs rush is finally over, the companies are once again investing their time and money into preparation for going public. And that’s driven by one of the key requirements for public companies - 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲. From the moment of your first trading hour the market holds you responsible for your forecasts and opinions. This drives teams to pay more attention to the quality of data and financial discipline. And I strongly believe that responsibility and accuracy are great for maintaining the necessary level of resources the company needs to innovate and create value. Another perk is an opportunity to introduce motivation systems linked to long-term growth of the company’s valuation. By issuing 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐞𝐬 the company allows them to really own the company, share the same benefits as other investors and feel how their actions are influencing the overall success. Lastly, public market is still the most 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥. If the business demonstrates resilience, growth and dedication to its mission and values despite all the fluctuations around, it will be able to benefit from tapping into the largest community of investors that exists. I honestly believe that being supported by the households as well as by institutional investors is one of the great indicators that the business is doing something right.
