Look at this round little birb🕊️!
The black-capped chickadee is a favorite of birdwatchers everywhere. Adorable, cheerful, and singing beautifully, they are a common enough sight that can brighten anyone’s day. Their gray body, white cheeks, and black cap are distinctive enough to be recognized even by amateurs.
Chickadees, like many other songbirds, eat insects, berries, and seeds, but unlike other songbirds, chickadees are known to hoard food sometimes, creating a store for later by hiding seeds in crevices. They can remember dozens, even hundreds of hiding spots! This comes in useful during breeding season, when the males are responsible for bringing food to the females, who stay in the nest, incubating eggs.
If you want to attract chickadees to your yard, provide their biggest needs – food and shelter. Fill bird feeders with sunflower seeds, and set up small nesting boxes (a 1.375 inch entry hole is big enough for the birds and small enough to keep out predators!). You can also plant berry bushes or flowers that will attract insects. And watching one of these little guys as you enjoy your morning coffee is just going to start your day off better💖.
