*Learning Through Analysis: Key Insights from the M5 Forecasting Competition* Frank Oppenheimer and Seneca the Younger both highlighted that the best way to learn is often through teaching or, in my case, through a detailed analysis of the M5 Forecasting Competition. By studying the competition's outcomes, I've gained a deeper understanding of how complex forecasting challenges can be tackled effectively. The M5 Competition, organized by the Makridakis Open Forecasting Center, provided an open platform for competitors to apply various forecasting methods to predict sales data from Walmart. This event particularly focused on assessing the accuracy and uncertainty of forecasts using a dataset enriched with variables like pricing, promotions, and special events. From my research into the competition's results, several crucial insights emerged. Integrating diverse modeling approaches, such as machine learning and deep learning, significantly enhances prediction accuracy. The competition demonstrated that incorporating external data such as promotional information and event impacts substantially improves forecast precision. These findings underscore the value of a multifaceted approach in time series forecasting and demand prediction. My analysis has distilled these methodologies into actionable strategies that can aid anyone working with similar data sets. Sharing these insights enriches our collective understanding and advances the field of data science. The exact role that #bigdata plays in #innovation is a subject of a diverging #debate, particularly so regarding #drivers, #loci, and applicable #theoretical foundations. The diffusion of #digitaltechnologies has dramatically increased the amount of #data collected and stored by #organizations. Despite a drastic increase in the amount of data collected and stored, the exact role that big data plays in innovation remains a subject of a diverging debate. This paper contributes to the field with a comprehensive #framework that coherently integrates both the individual theoretical lenses previously taken towards big data innovation and our findings regarding its drivers and loci. The findings of this study reveal that big data innovation primarily takes place cooperatively, in the form of #openinnovation or within #innovation networks, and that it is simultaneously driven by a variety of drivers. I have a question for the Operations Research & Management Science researchers out there: What are some of the high-quality, publicly accessible datasets available for OR research, such as supply chains, logistics, pricing, etc.? Think of the operations equivalent of ImageNet for bench-marking / testing new research and algorithms. Some examples I can think of are the Microsoft MIND Data Set for recommendation systems (https://msnews.github.io/) and the Technion SEE Lab (thank you Galit Yom-Tov Avishai Mandelbaum) for data on healthcare and call center operations (https://lnkd.in/gWKd3EQG). MSOM has also run data science challenges in the past, but these datasets are no longer accessible after the contests ended. Are there other good ones out there? Please leave a comment down below.
