Fantastic blog from Daniel Wainwright on the work that Camden has been doing to meet the steep challenges of the 21st century. It's very clear that the large-scale challenges faced by Governments 25 years into this new century - the rise of disinformation, efforts to erode democratic rights, the othering of parts of society, loneliness epidemic and the fraying of civic spaces and power - are in some ways most clearly addressable at the level most people experience "Government" and "policy": in their daily lives. Our way of viewing Government in the UK, in which an inward-looking set of buildings on Whitehall are the only important tools to address these grand challenges - is neither evidence-based nor fully fit for purpose to address these forces in the digital (and digital misinformation) age; and it's losing ground. We've seen in the US what happens when we listen to our own internal in-groups in Government rather than people on the ground - so as someone who lived through this the first time round in the US, let's take this _a lot_ more seriously here in the UK. What does that mean for Cambridge? A lot less "world-leading" chest thumping (also as someone who lived in Cambridge 2.0 with Harvard and MIT, world-leading based on what, though?) from the University and its attendant outriders, and a lot more actual hard graft and work with people who live here. Trickle down economics, as a theory of change, was widely debunked many years ago - but that seems to be the approach to this heralded massive growth in this tiny city with significant ecological and social challenges, from the University, the tech "ecosystem" and from central Govt. As I say elsewhere, it's not that hard to do better than this - but you have to be trying, at all. Let's listen and learn from Camden and other places taking this super seriously - and think a bit less about how terribly clever and important we are, and a lot more about the serious threats that are right on our doorstep. When inequity and inequality rise steeply, forces which are actively hostile to flourishing societies roll in. "It can't happen here", and dollar-signs-in-eyes, is not a strategy.
