CTE organizes with Associazione Aicap and fib – International Federation for Structural Concrete – Fédération Internationale du Béton the fifth edition of CACRCS 2025 from June 30th to July 3rd in Lecco CAPACITY ASSESSMENT OF CORRODED REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES: FROM RESEARCH TO DAILY ENGINEERING EVALUATION The CACRCS DAYS 2025 5th edition will focus on practical engineering applications achieved through consolidated research on corroded reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures. The workshop will cover a range of topics, starting with the definition of corrosion damage indicators and analysis of material characteristics, moving on to the evaluation of the structural behaviour of corroded members, and concluding with the prediction of the remaining service life of corroded structures and intervention strategies. Case studies on the assessment of deteriorated structures are of particular interest. Since 2019, the Workshop has attracted participation from experts in the capacity assessment of corroded reinforced concrete structures. The workshop is open to young researchers, experts, and practitioners. Happy to share that our paper on "Design of Slender Built-Up Back-to-Back CFS Channel Columns with Pinned Warping-Free Ends" is now published in Journal of Structural Engineering. https://lnkd.in/gz_TFNYq. This is the next research study that I and Prof Mahen Mahendran conducted on the applications of built-up cold-formed steel channel members and solutions for related questions from CFS building engineers in Australia. Other papers on this topic can be found here: https://lnkd.in/g5-guFFV Highlights · Investigated the behaviour of built-up back-to-back channel (BC) compression members with pinned warping-free ends. · Torsional and flexural-torsional buckling modes are not critical. · The capacity of BC compression members could be significantly higher than twice that of their individual members. · Arrangement and characteristics of screw connections could have considerable effects. · BC members with pinned warping-free ends have lower compression capacities than those with pinned warping-fixed ends. · Proposed a reliable DSM based design method and recommendations.

Thrilled to share the groundbreaking results of our collaborative research conducted during my stay at Politecnico di Milano, under the guidance of Giovanni Muciaccia, and in collaboration with Dr. Davood Mostofinejad’s team at the Isfahan University of Technology. Our latest paper, "Experimental Study of Fatigue Behaviour of CFRP-to-Concrete Bonded Joints Employing the EBROG Strengthening Technique," tackles critical challenges in strengthening RC structures with FRP. We utilized an innovative approach called externally bonded reinforcement on grooves (EBROG), which aims to delay or prevent FRP debonding. Despite extensive studies on EBROG joints, their behavior under cyclic fatigue loading remained unexplored—until now. Our empirical study investigates the behavior of CFRP-to-concrete bonded joints under low and high-cycle fatigue loading. The results demonstrate that the EBROG method significantly extends the fatigue life of these joints compared to traditional methods. This achievement is a testament to the relentless efforts, dedication, and support from Giovanni Muciaccia and the entire team at Politecnico di Milano. The 13th International Conference on Structures in Fire (#SIF24) was held in Coimbra, Portugal, from June 19-21, 2024. Our Chair was represented by a paper written by Sara Uszball, Faranak Faghihi and Professor Markus Knobloch. Sara Uszball presented the paper entitled "Modelling thermal creep of ultra-high-strength steels under steady state temperature conditions". #Abstract: The material behaviour of structural steels at elevated temperatures is strongly influenced by thermal creep which is defined as time-, temperature- and stress-dependent inelastic strain. In advanced fire engineering and design of steel structures, the explicit consideration and precise modelling of thermal creep is of great importance, as creep strains besides other temperature- and rate-dependent thermal-induced phenomena significantly contribute to the deformations of steel structures on cross-sectional, member and structural levels. However, there is still a lack of knowledge on the elevated-temperature creep of high- and ultra-high-strength steels which are increasingly used in sophisticated engineering structures with fire safety requirements like high-rise buildings. This paper presents a comprehensive study on the thermal creep behaviour of ultra-high-strength steels of grades S960QL and S960M. The results of elevated-temperature creep tests at temperatures relevant in terms of material technology and structural fire design are presented. Based on the experimental results, a consistent analytical creep model is developed to determine the creep strains of ultra-high-strength steels using the theoretical creep formulation according to Fields & Fields as a basis and adapting material parameters for the specified materials. The proposed model is implemented further in numerical simulations with the aim of future applications in advanced case studies. #creep #high_strength #steel #civilengineering #fire #steelstructures

Another one of our articles on Cu-based shape memory alloys (SMA) just came out in the ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering. This is the first comprehensive study on quantitative evaluation of the machinability of Cu-based shape memory alloys bench marked against NiTi SMAs and traditional steels. The article specifically focuses on machining of SMAs for civil engineering applications. Special thanks to my colleagues Dr. M. Saiid Saiidi, Dr. Yoshikazu Araki, and Dr. Kise. Research Presentation  I am pleased to share a presentation based on the research conducted by Zhong Tao, Tian-Yi Song, Brian Uy, and Lin-Hai Han, which investigates the bond behavior of concrete-filled steel tubes (CFST) . This comprehensive study provides significant insights into the structural performance and bond strength of CFSTs, which are critical for high-rise building construction and other engineering applications.  Key Highlights: Extensive push-out tests on circular and square CFST specimens. Detailed analysis of various steel types (carbon and stainless steels) and concrete types (normal, recycled aggregate, and expansive concretes). Innovative techniques to enhance bond strength, including the welding of internal rings and shear studs. Excited to announce our latest publication in the ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering: “Experimental Investigation of the Shear Resistance of CLT Panels with Unreinforced and Reinforced End Notches.” This comprehensive experimental study, involving 174 test specimens, highlights a significant gap in current wood design standards across North America, which lack provisions for notched CLTs. We hope our work provides valuable insights for engineers designing notched CLT panels and ways to reinforce them with screws in mass timber structures, and inspires future updates to design guidelines and standards.
