Dr. D. Manikandan’s leadership approach exemplifies the critical principle of ground-level engagement in public administration. True leadership transcends bureaucratic isolation, requiring direct, unfiltered interaction with constituents. By personally connecting with villagers, understanding their immediate challenges, and demonstrating empathy through tangible actions like providing transportation and support, the District Collector breaks traditional hierarchical barriers. Such proactive leadership transforms administrative roles from distant decision-makers to responsive, compassionate public servants. The essence of effective governance lies not in sophisticated reports or distant planning, but in direct human connection. When leaders step out of their comfort zones, they gain unmediated insights into systemic challenges, citizen experiences, and genuine community needs. This approach creates authentic accountability, where policy meets lived reality. Rapid, unpredictable field visits serve multiple purposes: they humanize bureaucracy, provide real-time performance metrics, and create immediate channels of trust between administration and citizens. Despite the devastating impact of the protectionism era – when speaking Dharawal was punished with ration cuts and child removal – the Dharawal people of the La Perouse Aboriginal community managed to keep their language alive thanks largely to the efforts of five senior women. Let’s transform every girl’s dream into reality.      Introducing Sania, a young girl whose resolve shines brighter than the fields she cultivates. As her sisters pursue education, Sania aspires for higher education.      Sania, inspired by Hindi, embodies infinite potential. Her sisters’ growth kindles in her a thirst for knowledge that surpasses boundaries.      Traceable Giving Foundation spotted Sania’s potential and became her beacon, providing the necessary resources, support, and a community to foster her aspirations.      Education bestows not just academic knowledge, but also freedom and potential. Sania’s spirit is unyielding, her future limitless.      Likewise, TGF launched a campaign to sponsor girl students’ education. The primary goal of the Brighter Tomorrow project is to empower and elevate girl students through education.      Currently, we have chosen 13 girls. #GroundUpStories | ‘The Tiwa population in Meghalaya is concentrated in the Ri Bhoi district, where the absence of official recognition for the community has resulted in a unique set of negotiations and adaptive strategies. One such strategy is taking on Khasi surnames, aimed at gaining access to sociopolitical benefits tied to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. During my fieldwork in Amjong, a village in Ri Bhoi, I came across a few families that, in addition to adopting Khasi surnames, are quite fluent in the Khasi language. One of the residents, Joseph M,* shared, “When you’re around people who can speak as many as five different languages, it’s hard to be critical of how they speak.” He was referring to how most people in Amjong are comfortable with both Khasi and Tiwa, along with knowing a bit of Assamese, English, and Hindi. Intermarrying serves as another negotiation strategy. Joseph further added, “My younger brother, who now lives in Shillong, married a woman from Meghalaya’s Khasi tribe, and this has made it easier for his two children to acquire ST status.” Lineage is drawn from the mother’s side among the Khasis.’ Lacking Scheduled Tribe recognition in Meghalaya, the Tiwa community is adopting Khasi language and surnames and marrying people from local tribes for survival.
