The average site engineer or supervisor expects to be paid for the time spent on site, not necessarily for the value they bring to it. As an engineer on site, you are expected to add value to all ongoing activities. You should not be on site just scrolling on your phone or sitting idly. I always tell younger engineers that you should not be on site, collecting a salary, and also causing your organization to spend money correcting errors. Always work closely with the workers on site. Check plumb and alignment, carry your steel measuring tape, and use it regularly. Consistently verify all the measurements for accuracy, check door and window measurements. Many errors on site can be spotted from a distance, so go to that vantage point and observe the work for immediate corrections before it’s too late. Remind yourself that you shouldn’t be collecting a salary for work you’re not fully committed to.
