After last week's heatwave, we want to re-emphasize the issues the hot weather can bring to people experiencing homelessness. They're faced with finding shade, cold drinking water, and places to shower off, while being at higher risk of sunburn, dehydration, and heatstroke. Here are 5 essential ways you can help: 💧 Bottled Water - Staying hydrated is crucial in hot weather to prevent dehydration. ☀️ Donate sun cream – Protects against sunburn, which people experiencing homelessness are at a much higher risk of. 📞 Contact local council – Councils can activate Severe Weather Emergency Protocols. 🧢 Provide hats & sunglasses - Helps prevent heatstroke and eye damage. ∞ Contact StreetLink – This service connects homeless people with local support services, ensuring they get the help they need. "Every person deserves a place to call home, a sanctuary where they can find peace, comfort, and security. But for many individuals who are homeless or living in supported accommodation, that basic necessity is a distant dream, overshadowed by the harsh realities of poverty, trauma, and societal neglect. In the face of such adversity, it is easy to turn a blind eye, to convince ourselves that the problem is too big, too complex, too overwhelming to tackle. Here’s an Idea, Prince William: Let’s End Rough Sleeping for Good I was part of a team that opened a hotel during the Everyone In initiative at the height of Covid-19. Overnight, we provided shelter, safety, and dignity to people who had been sleeping rough. It was a profound reminder that homelessness is not an insurmountable problem—it’s one we can solve when we treat it with urgency and compassion. The pandemic showed us what’s possible. Governments found funding, bureaucracy was simplified, and organizations collaborated. In a matter of days, people who had been forgotten by society were given stability and support. Lives were changed—some even saved. So, if we could do it then, why not now? The same challenges exist: lack of affordable housing, economic pressures, and underfunded support systems. The difference is urgency and political will. Ending rough sleeping permanently requires: 1. Housing First: Provide stable housing as a foundation for recovery and growth. 2. Simplified Processes: Remove red tape and delays in accessing help. 3. Sustained Funding: Invest in affordable housing and long-term support. 4. Collaboration: Unite councils, charities, and businesses for shared solutions. 5. Prevention: Address root causes like poverty, trauma, and unemployment. During Covid, society decided that rough sleeping was unacceptable. That mindset should remain—not just during a crisis but always. We’ve proven it’s possible. Now, we need the will to make it permanent. Prince William has made homelessness one of his key focuses. With the backing of the Prince of Wales and initiatives like Homewards, this is our opportunity to build on the lessons of Covid and create a legacy where rough sleeping is not just reduced but eliminated. If we can bring everyone in once, we can do it again. The sheer number of people sleeping rough on the streets is staggering—a stark reminder of the growing homelessness crisis in our country. But this isn’t just a problem confined to the capital. Here in Stoke-on-Trent, I’ve witnessed people taking shelter in tents in our public parks, their lives reduced to a daily struggle for survival. This is not the Britain we aspire to be. I fully support the heartfelt work of our future king, Prince William, in his campaign to tackle this devastating issue. His vision to end homelessness is bold, compassionate, and desperately needed. It’s a call to action for all of us to recognise the humanity in every person, regardless of their circumstances. On a local level, we’re fortunate to have a hero in Lou Macari. What he is doing to support those in need in Stoke-on-Trent is nothing short of extraordinary. His tireless efforts provide not just shelter, but hope and dignity to people who have been forgotten by society. If ever there were someone deserving of a Knighthood, it is Lou Macari. This crisis demands more than words. It demands action, compassion, and a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths about the society we’ve become. The Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) is activated when temperatures drop to life-threatening levels, ensuring that shelters and support services are available for those who need them most. However, despite these efforts, rough sleepers continue to face severe challenges, particularly in regions with limited resources. Charities like The Salvation Army are working tirelessly to provide emergency shelter, hot food, and essential clothing, but these organisations can’t do it alone. Local communities also play a crucial role in supporting vulnerable individuals through these difficult times. The Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (#MYEFO) predicts deficits for the next four years, which will hurt those experiencing hardship and homelessness the most.  We urge the Federal Government to prioritise people who are vulnerable in #Budget2025 planning. The growing crises of homelessness, housing affordability, and the rising cost of living are already affecting too many lives, especially those struggling the most. Marion Bennett, our Executive of Practice, Evidence and Impact said: “Investing in ending homelessness isn’t a short-term expense – it’s a long-term saving. Every dollar spent on preventing homelessness reduces future costs to our healthcare, justice and community services systems. This not only improves quality of life but also boosts economic productivity, as people are better able to engage in education and work and rely less on income support.”  All in all, greater Government investment in preventing homelessness = a healthier, safer and more productive Australia. With government leadership, we can #endhomelessness through: 💰 Raising JobSeeker and other income support to at least $82/day and increase maximum threshold of Commonwealth Rent Assistance by 60%.  🏡 Building 1 million new social & affordable homes over 20 years.  💡 Creating a $500M Homelessness Prevention Transformation Fund to stop people becoming homeless in the first place.  👦👧 Funding youth-specific housing, including Youth Foyers.
