The 30th post in my "32 days of Case Studies in Retrofitting Suburbia" project. My first post from Australia (just arrived today). Only 2 more to go!
Case Study II.30: Meriden Green, Meriden, CT
In a stellar example of #regreening a retail site, a park called Meriden Green, thoughtfully designed and engineered, replaced a dead enclosed shopping mall built over a culverted portion of a flood-prone brook. The park features the daylit brook, one and a half miles of walking paths and pedestrian bridges, an amphitheater with canopied stage, and provisions for a regular farmer’s market.
The land was extensively regraded into a park landscape that functions as a stormwater basin capable of retaining up to 60 acre-feet of water—an area equivalent to thirty Olympic-sized swimming pools—thus removing 227 properties in Meriden’s historic downtown core from the 100-year flood plain.
The retrofit efforts also upgrade and increase the stock of quality affordable housing nearby an enhanced transit center. All these changes contribute to revitalizing an economically distressed town.
Team: Milone & MacBroom, AECOM, the City of Meriden, plus many city, state, and federal agencies.
