A heartfelt thank you to My HR Pros, Fort Smith Regional Alliance, and City of Van Buren, Arkansas for supporting my participation in Community Development Institute (CDI) Central this week! I wanted to share 10 of the most impactful things I learned in Year 1: 1. A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader. A great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves! 2. People don’t want to work where they don’t want to live. 3. Everyone has a voice and everyone has a role in their community.  4. Collaborative problem solving + respectful dialogue + diversity of opinion = transformative change  5. Data gives your story strength.  6. Your downtown is what your community thinks of itself. 7. 3 critical, often missed steps in volunteer management: increase responsibilities and growth opportunities, recognition and celebration, and exiting volunteers gracefully.  8. If my community is above average I can expect to live above the average lifespan. 9. Every leader needs to know 5 good things about their community. 10. What can you repurpose in your community to give you an advantage? Our keynote speaker was from the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute! She shared that moving to Petit Jean was the sunrise of Rockefeller’s dreams. I relate to that so much! I strongly encourage every community leader to consider participating in CDI. 🌟 Playfulness + Purpose = A Stronger Community 🌟 Today, I was reminded of the simple joy of play—and its incredible power to make someone’s day. Whether it’s a quick laugh, a shared experience, or a creative moment, those small gestures can have a ripple effect on the people around us. Play isn’t just for kids. It’s about connection, engagement, and breaking down barriers. When we play, we open ourselves up to community building in its truest form—creating bonds that transcend roles and titles. In workplaces and beyond, fostering a culture where people feel valued and connected is critical. And here’s the secret: community building and culture go hand in hand. When we invest in relationships, embrace moments of fun, and create spaces where people can show up as their authentic selves, we’re building something far greater than just camaraderie—we’re building trust, loyalty, and shared purpose. So here’s my challenge for you today: find a moment to play. Share a smile, ask someone a lighthearted question, or simply create an opportunity for someone to feel seen. You never know how much of a difference it could make. Let’s make every day a little brighter—for ourselves and for each other. Because when we bring joy to others, we strengthen the fabric of our communities. 💡
