How to avoid updating your reel, make one for someone else! Jessica Augarde asked me to create a showreel featuring her work. The goal was to find ways to bring each campaign or rebrand to life through motion. There was a tricky balance with this project. I had all the build files so had free reign to animate them however I liked, but the aim was to use animation to show off the designs rather than the animation itself. In the end I think we got that balance! Using different types of mockup helps show off the wide range of work Jess does and how diverse it truly is! I also had my first foray into 3D on a client project to create my own custom mockups for the magazine and flyer designs at 00:35 😁 I think it was Reece Parker that first got me onto the idea of asking to animate other designers work. Ever felt like your ego tripped you up in your creative career? I’ve been there. Early in my career, after three years at an agency, I jumped into illustration with zero experience. My biggest mistake? Entitlement. I thought I was better than I was just because I’d studied design. With no track record in illustration, my inflated ego led me to freelance way too early—and it almost ruined my career. Design can be tricky. It’s easy to feel special and slip into arrogance because of our niche. Confidence is great, but you need a solid track record and a plan. Don’t just expect things to fall into place. When you're a freelancer, it requires a lot of patience and I mean A LOT! It's expected of clients to come back with requests and changes to a degree. But that doesn't mean you can't get it right on the first try, which is rare but I digress. As a Christian, a follower of Jesus, the Bible talks about how patience comes from the Holy Spirit. I can try to emulate patience to my understanding, but it's not the same when it comes from Him. Because let's face, no one wants to work with an impatient creative. What you do and how you act is one of determining factors of a returning client. And that goes both ways. As the client and as the creative. But as for me, serving clients is a partnership. Well, I might as well ask! 😂 As much as us illustrators and designers love spending time on personal projects, portfolio boosters, and creative lovely things to improve as artists, we simply don’t have the time. So we need to be pretty selective about what to spend our free time on, making sure it’s not only fun but also impactful—and can double up as an advert for our skills. So what do the people who judge us on our work like to see? The obvious answer, as we’re always told, is that you like to see what we are passionate about. That’s great, except - we are passionate about so much!
