Happy Friday, and to heck with hurricanes! For everyone dealing with this, prayers up for you. All I can tell you is that this is twice in as many months that a hurricane/tropical depression has affected the piedmont of N.C., and that’s not common in my tender 45 years. It’s not all bad news though, from my desk this past week: · ILMA time! - Excitedly, my wife and I will be first timers at ILMA, bringing KAJO North America to the event. Very excited to learn, network, and celebrate our great industry. · Port Strike – I posted a link with hope last week, but now this seems an inevitability. The economic disruption this causes, from even a single day, is staggering ($5 billion per day, per JP Morgan). · Safer USA – violent crime fell 3% from 2022 to 2023. Largest drop in 20 years. Always welcome to read! · Navistar no more – rebranding time! On Oct. 1 Navistar will be known as International Motors, Inc. Wise move? Kudos for boldness. · Article of note – great piece from Precision Lubrication on accuracy vs. consistency: Particle Counting in Condition Monitoring - Managing Expectations (precisionlubrication.com) · One K store closes, another opens – Kmart closed its final store this week. I remember those K-Mart runs as a kid, I salute you 1980’s! Now, another K store has opened, KAJO North America! On our store aisles you’ll find different varieties of bio-lubricants, conventional lubricants, products that your customer needs, and the ability to move fast for you. KAJO: Lubricants made in Germany, now proudly invested in North America. Say a prayer for those affected by Helene, otherwise enjoy your weekend! The Mt. Joy Orchard in Portland is so cool. A tale, in two Instagram posts, on how community-minded organizations might consider responding to neighborhood density, development and food access in urban communities. #1) The orchard team, in an honest and authentic push to protect this really special and unique community asset, mobilizes community members to push back against a zoning variance in support of a new high-rise apartment complex right across the street. https://lnkd.in/eyjCxrhd #2) They dig in. A community member conducts a shadow/lighting study. It's not actually that bad, at least in terms of blocking out the sun from this shared growing space. The team responds quickly, thoroughly, and with nuance - pointing out that bird-safe glass should be used to protect the haven of biodiversity and that affordability provisions are an essential piece of community livelihood and viability. Commenters and volunteers weigh in to a thoughtful discussion in the comments. https://lnkd.in/e_WQ4_z7 Weighing multiple needs against the status quo? Upholding community health and integrity as we decide what our city looks like next? A reflective and productive conversation in the Instagram comments? Who would've thought.
Mt. Joy Orchard on Instagram: "Update: we got more and better data and are changing our position on the development of the Northern Burner Supply lot. We received a ton of feedback and commentary in response to our recent communications about Redfern Properties’ plans to develop the Northern Burner Supply lot adjacent to Mount Joy Community Orchard. One thing I love about freelancing is I get to have conversations with so many interesting people just by reaching out and asking. #freelancer #geospatial #GIS #storytelling #cartography #maps #storymaps #survey123 #fieldmaps
Had a great discussion with Diana Carson-Walker, the co-founder of the Finding Human Project - a nonprofit using theater tools and story circles to connect people. My biggest takeaway is the importance of using stories to construct a shared reality when it comes to using environmental data to inspire and effect change. I loved this quote from her article (linked): "Science informs us what needs to happen; story and connection are what make us care." https://lnkd.in/g9q695yY #environment #data #storytelling #climatechange #geospatial #storymap
