Only in Germany one in four trains still run on fossil fuels, due to a lack of overhead line infrastructure. 🚆 Germany's Shift to Diesel Trains Amid Hydrogen-Powered Fleet Challenges The Taunus network has faced ongoing technical issues with the hydrogen-powered iLint Alstom multiple-units, prompting the operator to replace them with diesel-powered Lint41 units on route RB15, starting January 2025. ⚡➡️🚂 This decision comes after a series of setbacks with the hydrogen fleet, which was initially introduced in December 2022 for routes in the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund GmbH (RMV) network. While the hydrogen trains were expected to operate on several routes, including RB15, the reliability of the fleet fell short. 🚫 The RMV has confirmed that they will continue using hydrogen-powered trains on route RB12, but other routes will see the return of diesel units. RMV's Chairman, Ulrich Krebs, emphasized the importance of a reliable timetable for passengers and expressed regret over the setbacks from Alstom. The company has committed to overhauling the iLint vehicles to improve their performance and ensure long-term reliability, aiming to get them back on track beyond 2025. 🔧⚙️ While this transition back to diesel is seen as necessary for operational reliability, it highlights the challenges faced in the adoption of new forms of traction technology in the rail sector. 🌱🚆 #RailTransport #HydrogenTrains #Sustainability #Innovation #PublicTransport #Germany
