For millennia, food systems have embraced circular economy practices, including recycling waste, sustainable production methods, and food preservation to minimize waste. Modern agricultural practices also contribute by reusing waste products and reducing inputs. However, there are food safety impacts to consider. This paper delves into sustainable agricultural practices like alternative rice cultivation and no-till agriculture, highlighting their unintended effects on food safety. Alternative rice cultivation conserves water and cuts costs but alters foodborne arsenic and cadmium levels. No-till agriculture minimizes soil erosion and reuses crop residues but can elevate foodborne mycotoxin levels. The study discusses trade-offs, future research needs, and policy recommendations, shedding light on the intersection of sustainable agriculture and food safety.
