🚀 Did You Know? Before WeWork became a global name in coworking spaces, it had a humble beginning with just a single, small location in New York City. Founded in 2010 by Adam Neumann and Miguel McKelvey, the company’s original vision was to create a shared workspace for startups and freelancers. But their passion and vision turned it into a massive network of creative, collaborative spaces worldwide. Here’s a mind-blowing fact: The initial idea was not just about providing office space but about fostering a sense of community and belonging. This focus on creating a vibrant, interconnected environment is what ultimately propelled WeWork to its current prominence. The journey from a single location to a global powerhouse is a testament to the power of vision and perseverance. So next time you face a challenge, remember: Big dreams often start with small steps. What is the composition of business ideas in your downtown? What is the rate of successful, sustainable business models in the district? What are the growth/scaling up numbers? How many graduates from local and regional schools are coming to start up in town? Answers to these questions can tell us whether we need an assistance type of district management, an incubator type, or a partnership type of organization. The luxury of being a partner of local businesses is one not all places have. It positions them in such a way that the offer becomes very difficult to pass on. Ideally, all places should play their incubator role well and attain partner potential. Great places where local businesses and place managers have crafted spectacular experiences delivered with outstanding hospitality are not many, but their example is truly inspiring. Let’s start by answering the questions above and getting to know the path ahead so your place can also become an incubator and soon a fabulous partner of thriving local businesses that create a healthy, wealthy city. #placemaking #mainstreet #economicdevelopment #downtown #magic

The journey of a startup rarely follows a straight line, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you a fairy tale. Every founder faces an array of unpredictable twists, turns, and barriers that will test your resolve. One stark lesson is to always remain open to serendipitous opportunities, even when roadblocks seem insurmountable. Reflecting on an article that highlights the reality of startup life, it’s clear that external factors—ranging from economic conditions to local politics—can present significant hurdles. But let's not forget: amidst the chaos, there are lessons to be learned, new paths to explore, and connections to be made. Instead of shying away from adversity, embrace it. Adapt, pivot, and most crucially, foster a mindset that welcomes unexpected twists. My own ventures—like 5 Minute Founders, which distills business wisdom into digestible content, and Quuu.co, which helps you discover valuable content to share—have been built on this philosophy. Failures and unexpected situations are the norm, not the exception. It’s in these moments that you can uncover insights that reshape your strategy and resources. The question is, how will you respond to the unpredictable? I invite you to reflect and share your own stories of unexpected challenges and triumphs. Let’s keep the conversation going and encourage one another through the tumultuous world of startup life. https://lnkd.in/envTNNF9

My Thoughts After Attending Start Up Week Denver Just returned from an inspiring Denver Startup Week with a renewed perspective on innovation, thanks to a key insight from my co-founder, Andrew. At the pitch competition, Andrew was struck by the caliber of ideas solving niche problems with impressive traction. That's when Andrew turned to me and said, "Great ideas don't happen in Q4 board meetings." This simple observation crystallized what we've been working on for the past year and a half. Reflecting on the week, I realized the most memorable moments and connections happened in non-traditional settings - bars, cafes, and casual spaces where I felt at ease, even among strangers. This led us down a fascinating research rabbit hole, uncovering quantitative support for the link between communal spaces and innovation throughout history. From Watson and Crick's DNA breakthroughs at The Eagle Pub to the birth of Southwest Airlines on a cocktail napkin, history is filled with examples of world-changing ideas sparked in informal environments. These "third spaces" create a unique atmosphere where hierarchies dissolve, diverse connections form, and creativity flourishes. For Boulder's vibrant tech and startup community, embracing these spaces could be transformative. They're not just for unwinding - they're catalysts for the serendipitous encounters and relaxed thinking that often lead to breakthroughs. The future of innovation in Boulder might very well be sketched on the back of a napkin at your local pub. So the next time you're mulling over a challenging problem, consider stepping out of the office and into a third space. You never know – that casual conversation over a drink might just lead to the next big breakthrough. Stay tuned for another article where I go a little bit more in depth. #Innovation #Startups #ThirdSpaces #BoulderTech #DenverStartupWeek

🌟 Gratitude Post 🌟 Starting a business is never easy, and the early days of building Enclave Studios were no exception. Like many startups, we faced challenges — from inconsistent revenue flow to navigating Hong Kong's demanding housing situation. During this time, we were in desperate need of an affordable yet inspiring workspace where we could pour our energy into our projects, day and night. This is where theDesk stepped in and made a world of difference for us. Not only did they provide us with an incredible co-working space, but they also offered us the highest level of support when we needed it the most. Their Wan Chai office was absolutely perfect for our needs. Located just a 2-minute walk from the Wan Chai MTR station, it offered unbeatable convenience. The area is surrounded by fantastic food options, making it easy to grab a quick bite or have lunch meetings. Being in the center of the city also saved us a ton of travel time. In addition to offering a welcoming workspace, theDesk went above and beyond by helping us organize events that allowed us to connect with others in the community and showcase what we were working on. These events were instrumental in helping us gain traction in the early days of Enclave, and we owe much of our growth to their unwavering support. What sets theDesk apart for me is its genuine commitment to startups and entrepreneurs. They truly embody the spirit of collaboration and support, creating one of the most nurturing co-working ecosystems in Hong Kong. I cannot thank Harry Sutherland Zack Ching for the support they have provided us in our journey. I am also thrilled to share that theDesk is extending their generosity to our network by offering special discounts for the upcoming year. If you're on the hunt for a welcoming co-working space with hot desks, an inspiring community, and a team that genuinely cares about your success, I can't recommend theDesk enough. Thank you, Harry Sutherland, Polina Sarafanova, Bowie Ma, Zack Ching & theDesk, for believing in us when we needed it the most. Your support has been invaluable, and we're proud to be part of your ecosystem. 💙 #Gratitude #Startups #Entrepreneurship #theDesk #Coworking #HongKong #Support #Community

As I am walking down to my car after CED (Council for Entrepreneurial Development)'s Venture Connect Summit reflecting on the friendships over the years and countless startups from restaurants to tech like Pendo and biotech and life science and you name it that have been built out of Raleigh, I saw this image... ... we have a building that's been empty since COVID (Citrix) ... a building that houses people that love downtown Raleigh, Startups, and Main Street businesses ... and a crane helping construct a future building on a property that literally nobody in the real estate community would ever sell --- people tried for years It was in that moment that I asked myself the question... Would it'd be crazy for a group of people who want to build the future of Raleigh all become the owners of the Citrix building (buy it -- dirt to tower) and build it into landmark that houses the future entrepreneurs and residents and others who make this place special?... Probably but s***! If no one asks the question, nothing will ever get done. This will probably go nowhere but hell, why not ask to find some PMF. Who wants to buy the Citrix building with me? -entrepreneurial events in the building -childcare onsite -co-working during the day -a rotating culinary cuisine from the full commercial kitchen -our favorite bands in the evening on the parking lot rooftop ...and anything else the community can dream up to build the future of Raleigh. It starts with the people...with an idea If 100 people comment on this post wanting to do it, I'll commit to finding a way to make it happen with y'all. If not, no worries. I'm sure some outside developer will buy it and shape Raleigh the way they think it should be built.
