Today, I got to explore a new hike with my family. Hello everyone! I want to share a coliving story with you and why I love this concept so much. Here’s a story: Three years ago, when I decided to start my digital nomad journey and leave the city where I had lived for eight years, someone told me, “Oh, Andreea, but you are already an adult. It will be hard for you to find a group of people because most friends and connections are made in high school or college. If you want to start your life from zero, you’re kind of doomed, because by this age—26, 27—everyone has already figured their life out.” They couldn’t have been more wrong. In these three years, I’ve met so many people and made so many connections that I never thought possible. The diversity of people from all around the world, from different countries, cultural backgrounds, and professional fields, is incredible. I was never able to witness such diversity before. This is why coliving is so great for your mental health and overall well-being. But one downside is that you meet people, make deep connections, and then they leave. I remember crying when someone who stayed for a month left. Now, I am more resilient. Yes, I still miss them, and I know our paths will cross again one day. And what makes it easier is that new people and experiences are just around the corner. Maintaining all these great connections can be challenging, but the positives far outweigh the negatives. It’s not true that you have a limited age by which you can make connections and friends. You can always make new friends. The downside is balancing all the goodbyes and hellos. So yes, saying goodbye is still bittersweet, but it makes room for new faces, stories, and adventures. And for that, I’m grateful. What about you? Celebrating our 15th year at Hatch is an achievement I am very proud of. I can 100% say that all past and of course the present talented Hatchlings have all played their part in growing our brand, our offer and delivering for clients. Importantly though, we have also managed to have some fun along the way. I could say it's all been 'plane sailing' and how easy it is driving the business forward. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, last year was a really tough trading year for Hatch. There were multiple reasons for this, but for the most part it felt like brands were being cautious to invest against the backdrop of inflation and the cost of living crisis. I am sure some will blindly say everything is great all the time to keep appearances, but surely a bit of honesty goes a long way with your team and network. I know many suffered last year and I’m convinced our industry could have told everyone we were in a recession before the official technical figures were released! This was especially true in the first six months of 2023 for Hatch. However, I believe the sign of a good business is when things are tighter the team pull together, you focus on your talents and reinvigorate your offer. I am so proud of the team and the Board at Hatch, as the second half of 2023 saw us do just that, and we battled our way into a positive end to 2023. What’s more encouraging is this fight and desire has translated to an even stronger start to 2024, and based on the first three months of the year we are in for our best year yet. So I suppose the purpose of this post is really to celebrate talent in your team and to flag that business is always a roller coaster. If you are focused and engage the team, sometimes a little market challenge to ongoing growth can pay dividends.
