We must start recognizing the commonalities involved among law enforcement involved killings of unarmed black and brown citizens in our country. Former Deputy Grayson worked at six (six!!!) different law enforcement agencies in four years in the state of Illinois! Whether law enforcement or other professional fields, this would be a legitimate concern for any hiring manager. In public service, specifically public safety, we cannot allow the “good ole boy” or “buddy system” continue to flourish and protect those who should be held more accountable and frankly, don’t need to be trusted with keeping us safe. Passing troubled officers on to the next department is not the answer! It will only end in disaster for someone’s community. Possibly even yours. We ongoingly highlight the need for updated standard operating procedures, but we must start where it begins and that’s during the hiring and selection process. Hiring practices must be consistent with community needs and we need unapologetic leaders within our local governments and LEO agencies that are willing to do so! #EndGunViolence

Think there are too many lawyers? Not in Indiana. They're struggling to fill prosecutor and public defender positions with starting salaries above $80,000. If someone graduates with $200,000 in debt, I could see why they'd be hesitant. But if you could graduate with a fraction of the debt and have a path to licensure in Indiana--as you can with Purdue Global Law School as of July 1--the economics makes more sense. I'm hoping we can be part of the solution. #accesstojustice #indiana #lawschool https://lnkd.in/gjEkU9tU

Finding a place to call home can be tough for anyone, but for individuals with a criminal record, the journey can be particularly challenging. In California, where housing laws for convicted felons are among the strictest in the nation, the struggle is even more apparent, compounded by the state's high cost of living. But despite these hurdles, finding suitable housing is far from impossible. While California landlords can't discriminate based on race, gender or sexual orientation, there are no laws against discrimination based on a criminal record. However, certain exceptions exist, especially for non-violent offenses committed over a certain period. If you’re seeking housing, look for organizations and agencies that offer housing specifically for individuals with a criminal record, such as non-profits and religious groups. You may also want to consider having a friend or family member with a stable income co-sign to boost your chances of finding housing. While criminal records aren't a protected class, adverse housing decisions based on them may violate federal law. If you're unsure about your rights or need guidance, reach out for assistance. Today, I urged the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors to engage meaningfully and with urgency to resolve the labor and wage issues that have led the Sacramento County Public Defenders to go on strike. If this strike continues, our most vulnerable community members will suffer the most harm without adequate or zealous representation. The right to counsel and due process are fundamental pillars of the criminal legal system and ensuring a robustly funded public defender system is a key component. #advocate #education #justice #law #lawyers #lawschool #prelaw #sacramento #aclu #publicsafety

Position Announcement: Executive Director, Uptown People's Law Center Uptown People’s Law Center (UPLC) is not your typical legal aid clinic. Its origins stretch back to the early 1970’s, as one of a group of survival programs supporting community organizing in Uptown. This included the fight by former coal miners and their widows to secure black lung benefits for disabled coal miners, as well as efforts to combat slumlords and displacement. Over the years, UPLC grew into a stand-alone, full-service legal clinic. It has refined and sharpened its legal practice to reflect the changing times and the evolving legal needs of the people of Uptown and throughout the state. Its lawyers and support staff have developed strong expertise in the areas of housing law, Social Security disability benefits, and prisoners’ civil rights. UPLC is seeking a dedicated and dynamic leader at this critical point in its 45-year history to use the power of the law to protect the rights of people holistically. The next Executive Director will serve as the organization’s primary spokesperson and will have the opportunity to build on this success and purpose through ongoing and deepening relationships with the community of lawyers, law schools, prisons, and the people of Uptown and beyond. I started working at the The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland as a housing attorney a little over two years ago. During this time, I have learned a remarkable number of things from my clients and coworkers. Their resiliency and passion inspired me every day to advocate on their behalf, in court and in my workplace. I handled over 200 cases, going to trial over a hundred times, and helped around 90-95% of my clients avoid an eviction judgment on their records. The summary nature of evictions is a brutal gauntlet for tenants. I was in court two to three times a week and watched poor people (overwhelmingly Black in Cleveland) be evicted from their homes (by overwhelmingly white landlords). Tenants are scheduled in a cattle-call manner, sometimes 15-20 per hour, and barely even provided the time or dignity to tell their story. I highly recommend observing an eviction docket at your local municipal court if you have not done so before. I have a lot of thoughts and observations that I am going to share over the next couple weeks/months about my experience. The two central questions I kept asking myself and invite you to consider when you read these stories is: What was my role in this system? Does it have to be this way? Pictured is one of those days when I was in court accompanied by Kiki, my personal assistant. #legalaid #lawyers #socialjustice #housingjustice #evictions #capitalism #unionstrong #solidarity #community #cleveland

About 8,500 Gallatin County residents will soon receive postcards from Gallatin County District Court, alerting them to their selection to be in the 2024-2025 jury term for this court. These residents were randomly chosen to be a part District Court’s upcoming jury term, which runs from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025. Names are drawn from a combined list of Montana registered voters, Montana licenses drivers, and holders of Montana identification cards. District Court’s jurisdiction spans a diverse array of legal matters including criminal cases (primarily felonies), civil matters with over $12,000 damages, domestic relations, juvenile, probate, mental health, water cases, and appeals from Justice Court, Municipal Court, and administrative agencies. Recipients of these notifications are not being summoned for a specific jury trial at this time. Rather, they are being informed of their potential eligibility for jury duty during the upcoming year-long term. If you’re one of the folks who receives this card, complete the accompanying juror questionnaire ASAP! Failure to do so within 10 days of receiving your notice could result in a personal visit from the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, tasked with delivering questionnaires to non-responsive individuals. All postcards will include detailed instructions. If you have questions, please call the Gallatin County Clerk of District Court’s Office at 406-582-2168 or email gallatindcjury@mt.gov. #gallatincountymontana #juryduty #courts #jurors #jurysummons #montana #bozeman #attorneys #justice #judges #publicservice #civicduty
