🎥 Platform engineers as product managers? In his lightning talk at AWS re:Invent, Cortex CTO and co-founder Ganesh Datta explains how platform engineering is evolving and why thinking like a product manager can elevate your engineering team’s performance. Ganesh breaks it down (not like that, don't worry): ✔️ Ownership and accountability start the conversation ✔️ Aligning engineering with business outcomes is key ✔️ Driving engineering excellence through actionable initiatives 📽️ Check out the rest of this lightning talk here: https://lnkd.in/gpqwiuT3 and see why platform engineering isn’t just about building tools—it’s about building success.

This week I've been reading "Platform Engineering: A Guide for Technical, Product, and People Leaders" and its really resonated with some of the challenges we see on a day-to-day basis with running our large multi-tenant platform. It's also helped me to articulate the "why" behind Platform Engineering to other engineering leaders. If you're leading a Platform Engineering team this is one you should check out! https://lnkd.in/gtzRs4G9

Small tip for those building product teams for developer products. Here's a big failure mode: 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗣𝗠 𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺. If the engineering team is already user focused, this can be great, a PM can help with blocking and tackling to help accelerate However, if the engineering team is a bit more out to sea, you're going to need a strong PM to help redirect them. It's such a temptation to do 1:1 PM:EM combinations but for developer products, I've seen it vary more than that - some teams are backend focused, others are titled towards users. The 1:1 to team is great, but it's hard with developer products because some teams are just more infrastructure focused. You'll end up with PMs that are really just program managers or internal PMs to serve LOBs or what not. Those can work, but you've got to have organizational and product maturity to make it happen. We went through a bunch of iterations of this at Databricks, some that didn't work and some that did. Think critically about your team structure, lest you ship the org chart.

A recent survey involving 500 engineering leaders highlights how essential feature management and experimentation tools are for software teams aiming to excel in their field. The survey also reveals that engineering teams struggle without these tools. In particular, just 1 in 6 reported success without the capacity to monitor system performance and user behavior at the feature level. Discover more findings from the survey and take steps toward improving your feature management and experimentation processes: https://lnkd.in/d-wUxSpx #SoftwareEngineering #DevOps 🚀
