NAVE2 network welcomes new partner. Stedelijk Onderwijs Antwerpen officially joined the network today with General Director Mrs Gonda Verhaert signing the partnership agreement. Network for the Advancement of Vocational Education in Europe (NAVE2) consists of large VET organizations or associations that focus on a broad cooperation in the field of student and staff mobility and on strategic issues dealing with the development of VET in Europe. Is there a shift in the breeze about #TBO? Those who know us will know we’ve been discussing Trajectory-Based Operations for eight years. Why is that important? We’ll discuss that in our following posts as we approach the first Global Symposium on Trajectory-Based Operations in Brussels next month. We were first introduced to TBO in a room of enthusiastic EFB devotees at an ARINC/#IATA EFB User Forum in May 2011. The room was significant. It was ICAO’s main meeting hall in Montreal. The ICAO assembly meets here every three years to decide the future direction of the Aviation Industry globally. The concept sounded exciting. The room, full of airline technical pilots, EFB hardware, and App vendors, sat, transfixed. People looked around the room at each other nervously, recognising the presentation yielded a tectonic shift from the comfortable status quo, which they were rushing headlong toward. They needn’t have worried. For years, nothing happened (or so it seemed), and everyone forgot about it, like the other significant non-starter announced by ICAO during their presentation as meeting hosts. However, the work continued quietly in the background (maybe that’s part of the issue). All of a sudden, the tempo of TBO has picked up. #FF-ICE R1 is about to become a reality, and airlines must soon come to terms with it. The first Global Symposium will discuss every aspect of #TBO. While momentum on the other side of this seminal event is hard to predict, one thing is sure. TBO will no longer unfold quietly. The industry—airlines, in particular, should not underestimate #TBO. It is inevitable, and in one way or another, it will touch every aspect of the airline operation. We’ll be there. Who else? It was great to get out of the office for the afternoon, catch up with lots of familiar faces and meet new and interesting people at the Large Format Retail Association (LFRA) forum last Thursday. My two main highlights were: - the discussion with Mirja Viinanen, CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer from IKEA about the different sales formats Ikea has been investing in as well as its market leading sustainability initiatives; and - Craig Woolford's retail market presentation where he conveyed that: 💡 Retail Spending Trends: From 2019 to 2024, retail spending saw above-trend growth, with a significant recalibration in FY24 due to higher interest rates and living costs. Despite a 4% decline in FY24, the average growth over five years was just over 5%. 💡 Consumer Behavior: Households are expected to have more disposable income in the next 12-24 months due to easing interest rates and upcoming tax cuts. However, consumers are maintaining a budget-conscious mindset, leading to careful spending. 💡 Retailer Performance: Profit margins for most retailers have improved since FY19, with some exceptions in discount department stores. Store growth is slowing, and retailers are focusing on optimizing existing floor space. 💡 Future Outlook: The retail sector is expected to see a soft recovery, with household goods likely to benefit the most. Retailers are adapting to changing consumer behaviors and economic conditions to maintain profitability. 💡 Retail Floorspace Supply: Retail floorspace supply growth will be slow for the next five years, pushing up rents. Major incumbent retailers stand to benefit with better like-for-like sales growth. Whilst the delivery of housing is on everyone's minds at the moment, there are still opportunities for retailers and retail asset landowners to re-evaluate and optimize their existing floorspace and sites.
