The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) on Friday unsealed an indictment against an Iranian national for his alleged involvement in a multi-year cyber-enabled campaign designed to compromise U.S. governmental and private entities. More than a dozen entities are said to have been targeted, including the U.S. Departments of the Treasury and State, defense contractors that support U.S. Department of Defense programs, and an accounting firm and a hospitality company, both based in New York. Alireza Shafie Nasab, 39, claimed to be a cybersecurity specialist for a company named Mahak Rayan Afraz while participating in a persistent campaign targeting the U.S. from at least in or about 2016 through or about April 2021. "As alleged, Alireza Shafie Nasab participated in a cyber campaign using spear-phishing and other hacking techniques to infect more than 200,000 victim devices, many of which contained sensitive or classified defense information," said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams for the Southern District of New York. The spear-phishing campaigns were managed via a custom application that made it possible for Nasab and his co-conspirators to organize and deploy their attacks. #doj #cybercrime #cybercriminals #rewardsforjustice #cybersecurity #cyberawareness

US indicts Iranian man in cyber-espionage campaign against defense contractors. Why it matters: 1. The indictment highlights Iran's rampant cybercrime problem, with the U.S. accusing an Iranian cyber security specialist of launching a vast hacking campaign, compromising private sector and government systems. This underscores the increasing importance of robust cybersecurity measures. 2. Nasab's alleged extensive use of spearphishing and social engineering attacks underscores the sophistication and stealthiness of these methods, which can trick even defense contractors into compromising their systems. This shows the need for ongoing cyber awareness training in all sectors. 3. The U.S. government's response, launching official charges and offering $10 million for information, demonstrates its commitment to apprehending international cyber criminals, suggesting an escalating ‘tough-on-cybercrime’ stance that could deter future hackers. 🚨👾 This week in Oakham, a reminder that vigilance is key. Our local Police were out helping raise awareness against the invisible threats we all face online. Working with technology companies and writing about cybersecurity, I regularly research the latest strategies and advice that can help to keep businesses safe. Yet, this week's presence from our Police force is a powerful reminder: No one is beyond the reach of cybercriminals. The digital age has brought amazing convenience and connection, but also plenty of new opportunities for fraudsters and criminals to exploit. Whether it's phishing scams, identity theft, or financial fraud, the tactics are ever-evolving and increasingly sophisticated. The lesson here is clear. Despite our knowledge or the firewalls we hide behind, we are all potential targets. This is not just a technological battle but a communal one. It's about looking out for each other, sharing knowledge, and staying informed. 🚨 If you, or anyone you know, suspects they've become a victim of online fraud, please reach out to Action Fraud - the National Fraud and Cyber Crime Reporting Centre - https://lnkd.in/erAXvVpU 🗣️ Speak up. Your voice can be the deterrent that protects others and helps dismantle the networks that thrive on deception. 🏡 We can forge safer communities, both online and in real life, by working together. #cybersecurity #onlinesafety #communityawareness #Rutland
