“Over the years, our agency added new services to satisfy clients and win new business. We've grown quickly in this way. But as a result, we’ve also lost sight of who we are as an agency. Our leadership and staff are no longer aligned on the types of clients we should target or the work we should and shouldn’t be doing. We don’t have a clear way to talk about ourselves or the problems we solve. Our people describe our agency differently from one pitch to the next, causing further confusion. We tend to rely on using the idea of ‘great client service’ and ‘doing whatever it takes’ as a value prop, which leads to overpromising to clients and falls on teams to deliver, creating tension. Our range of services has caused a lot of internal inefficiencies, burning out our people and destroying our margins. Quality of work is inconsistent, and both client and employee retention is now an issue, adding more costs." What you just read are the problems that accumulate when an agency doesn’t have a focused business strategy. Having revenue goals is not a business strategy. Growth is not a strategy. Some agencies do grow quickly in this way. But they’re growing by default—chasing business they can close to meet numbers rather than growing by design.
