THROWBACK KNOWLEDGE THURSDAY⚓️ The origin of the knot as a unit of speed dates back to maritime history. It was initially measured by sailors using a “log-line” - a rope with evenly spaced knots attached to a log. The log was thrown overboard, and the number of knots that passed through the sailor’s hands in a specific time interval (usually measured by a sandglass) determined the vessel’s speed. This method, which evolved over centuries, eventually standardized the knot as a unit equal to one nautical mile per hour. One knot is equal to one nautical mile per hour, which is approximately 1.15 statute miles per hour or 1.85 kilometers per hour.
