As a technical lead, it's your responsibility to deploy your team's work quickly and consistently. Teams that can deploy quickly and maintain quality have a big advantage over competitors. 5 steps that big companies use to ship code to production: 1/ Planning The process of deploying code starts with the product team collecting user feedback & requirements. Defining the scope of work and creating a plan for how development will proceed. Product and engineering teams examine this data and divide it into smaller tasks, known as user stories. Most teams manage tasks with tools like Jira, Trello, or Asana and collaborate via Slack or Microsoft Teams. 2/ Development Developers write new code, add features, fix bugs, and update the codebase. Tasks are organized during sprint planning meetings and aligned with team capacity. Version control systems like Git store different code versions. Before merging, the code undergoes comprehensive unit tests. 3/ Build & Package Code is built into executable files or packages using tools like Maven and Gradle. This step may include compiling code, storing code, bundling assets, and creating deployment packages for easy deployment to the production environment. DevOps engineers automate the build process, manage dependencies, and package the code into deployable components. 4/ Testing The code built and packaged undergoes thorough testing to ensure it meets the requirements. This includes unit, integration, and end-to-end tests. QA engineers write and execute tests. Different testing frameworks are used for different purposes. 5/ Release Once the code has been tested and verified, it is released to the production environment.
