The institution of the marae does not have its origins in New Zealand, it was a concept brought across from Polynesia and Peru.
To believe that the idea of a marae is restricted solely to the shores of New Zealand is very small minded.
All the captains of the canoes that first settled New Zealand made it their business to establish marae for themselves. With every successive generation after that, forged ahead to build new settlements and set up new marae.
More recently, when Māori moved from rural villages in search of better employment opportunities in urban cities they quickly set up urban marae. Two of my uncles set about founding the Manurewa Marae, an urban marae. I remember them planting a tree at the dawn service.
Again, another set of uncles, who were in the Airforce and Navy set up a marae in Singapore.
With more Māori settling Australian cities, it is only a natural progression for them to establish marae.
In fact, Māori, wherever they decide to settle in the world on a permanent basis, they will build marae.
If I was a billionaire, I'd buy land and build marae for Māori to gather for functions. I would purchase the land and have the indigenous people come and bless it first, then start building a marae. No further consultation with the indigenous peoples would be required.
For in the future, as humankind begin settling other planets, it is anticipated that Māori will continue the long tradition of building marae for themselves where ever they decide to settle long term.
