Another call for help from the people in the trenches working on AI. An open letter warning about the dangerous tendency within OpenAI, Google, DeepMind and others to focus on profit and not safety of the products they release. One of the key points in the letter is that all of these companies are in possession of non-public information about how the models and applications have capabilities that could be harmful to society. And, surprise, none of the companies are releasing or discussing the limitations of their safety measures. And there is nothing in the way of regulation that forces them to tell us anything. This shot across the bow hopefully will start a conversation within these companies that they need to be more forthcoming and put in place a safety regime that is objective and independent. A New AI Checker for European Compliance In a world where AI is becoming more and more powerful, it's important to make sure it's being used safely and fairly. The European Union has created new rules called the AI Act to help keep AI in check. To see how well different AI models are following these rules, a special tool called the LLM Checker was created. This tool tested many popular AI models, like those from big companies like Meta and OpenAI. The LLM Checker gave each model a score based on how well it followed the AI Act. Some models did very well, but others had problems in certain areas. For example, some models were biased or unfair, while others were easy to trick. The LLM Checker's results showed that AI companies still have a lot of work to do to make sure their models are compliant with the AI Act. If they don't, they could face big fines. Overall, the LLM Checker is a helpful tool for companies to improve their AI models and ensure they are safe and fair for everyone.
