Christmas is coming! And Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without..........lorry drivers. Not your first thought, I'm sure, but if it wasn't for those lorry drivers making their way up and down the country, we wouldn't have the food and drink, presents, decorations, or any other physical manifestations of the festive season. By law, those drivers have to take regular breaks, and where they can stop and what those experiences are like varies considerably. National safety month continues this week with the emphasis on roadway safety, which for me brings to mind the texting while driving distraction that seems so prevalent. Recently on a short road trip it was easy to see that about 1/3 of the drivers I encountered where having “glow face” / talk to their lap neck while driving near them. Even though it’s illegal to do this in many states(maybe all?) for the obvious reasons it’s still very problematic as these drivers operate about as bad as an overserved bar patron while driving down the road. There’s a lot of ways to look at this but it brings to mind the need for management to continually lead by example and enforce the safety rules they have. Rules for safety are set in place for a reason as we all know but if management doesn’t fully enforce and watch out for compliance with purpose and intentionality….the workforce doesn’t follow ….. just like drivers on those Missouri roads weren’t concerned about that rule about not texting and driving. My challenge to the leaders is to lead. Hold your people accountable, even if it seems inconvenient or not necessary. Better to do that following an observation or discussion compared to following an injury. Better to write a ticket than call for help from the ambulance. #nationalsafetyweek #drivesafe #summer2024
