Commonwealth Bank’s Post

Relocating for my General Manager role was a big change but luckily, I had my mentor to help guide me through it. While I have worked for CommBank for 9 years, last year, I made the decision to relocate from Queensland to Victoria to step into a new leadership role. While excited about the opportunity and the change, the transition was filled with natural uncertainties of a new role and a fresh start in a new city. My manager recommended the Women in Banking and Finance Mentorship Program. I was paired with a leader for guidance, participated in workshops and networking events and had the opportunity to build the skills that helped with my career growth and success. It was exactly what I needed - a way to connect with other women leaders and gain the support and guidance from a mentor to thrive in my new role. My goal was to maximise my experience and I did that by investing my time in preparation and homework that turned discussions into action. I also gave myself space to be vulnerable which meant being open about my ambitions, fears and challenges. Ultimately, you get out what you put in, so I made sure that I had clear goals for every session, ready to discuss the challenges at hand at any given time. This mentorship has not only broadened my horizons but has also given me the confidence and tools to excel in my leadership role. Belinda Harris x CommBank General Manager Commercial Banking VIC

Congratulations on taking up your new role. But let me play Devil’s Advocate here for a moment. Reading your post, it would seem you did not feel ready for the General Manger’s role and sensibly took steps to become ready. But were there other candidates within the Bank who already had the skills and leadership credentials to take the role? Were you inserted into the role because of your gender over a person of the other gender with greater skills?

Ah this is wonderful, Belinda Harris! Congrats on the big move and the role leading the fabulous VIC team! I also did the WIBF mentorship program a few years ago while at CBA with the awesome Jeffrey Smartt. The insights I gained from the program and from Jeff's mentorship have been invaluable. Loved hearing about your wins - made my day! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
