Commonwealth Bank’s Post

"I studied Biomedical Engineering and never imagined I’d end up in banking. Yet, here I am, 16 years later still extremely passionate about the industry.   Throughout my career, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have supportive leaders who have championed my growth. I can recall moments when an opportunity would arise and the self-doubt would creep in, “I’d love to do that role, but…”, “the timing doesn’t seem right” or “I can’t do that.” But each time, a leader would be there to give me the confidence to push past those doubts, which was key to building my self-belief. One leader challenged my “I can’t” with “Why can’t you?” This has really stuck with me.   My recent move into sustainability was no different; without the typical sustainability background, the encouragement from my leaders was pivotal in helping me overcome that challenge. Looking back, I realise how these moments have shaped me to be the leader I am today and how important it is to have the support from those around you but also to give that same support to other aspiring female leaders in the industry.   That’s why I am so passionate about our sponsorship of Women in Banking and Finance. The sponsorship alongside their mentoring program is a great way for women in the industry to connect, learn and grow. The program creates a multiplier effect where women are supported through their leadership journeys and, in turn, will hopefully pay it forward one day."   Sarah Lalor x CommBank General Manager – ESG and Sustainable Finance
