As I near the end of the first semester of my Masters in Environmental Geology and Land Contamination, I am reflecting on an incredible journey of academic and professional growth. Since starting this program in September, I have deepened my understanding of contaminated land investigation, categorization, and how to effectively educate clients about complex site challenges. Here are some key highlights: 💡 Developing Ground Models and Conceptual Site Models (CSMs): My most recent assignment involved designing a comprehensive CSM for a proposed residential infill development project on a former petrol station site. This experience honed my skills in pollutant linkage analysis, data integration, and stakeholder communication, supported by emerging technologies such as AI tools for data validation. 💡 Fieldwork and Technical Insights: I have gained a deeper appreciation for the role of geoprofessionals under standards like Eurocode 7 and BS 5930:2015. I conducted a desk study and site walkover of a landslide-prone area as part of my preparation for a hypothetical energy power cable installation. This reinforced my ability to assess geological risks and environmental challenges. 💡 Professional Development: A personal highlight was attending and assisting at the UK & EIRE Spill Association Annual Awards and Conference alongside Mark Orr. It was inspiring to connect with industry leaders and engage in meaningful conversations with both seasoned professionals and emerging talent in the field. So far, this semester has been transformative, equipping me with practical skills and expanding my professional network. I am excited to carry these experiences into future projects and contribute to sustainable redevelopment and environmental stewardship. ❓ I’d love to hear from you —how are you integrating AI and emerging technologies into risk assessments, contaminated land, or spill response? What’s your biggest breakthrough? I’m looking forward to learning from your experiences! #EnvironmentalScience #ContaminatedLand #GroundwaterProtection #SustainableDevelopment #ProfessionalGrowth

NEW ISSUE The August/September issue of Ground Engineering reports on the University of Leeds’ programme to test for geothermal energy underneath its campus, and the development of a saturation hazard matrix for Scotland’s Rest and Be Thankful on the A83. The issue also includes an interview with Engineering Group of the Geological Society (EGGS) chair Anna Morley on driving sustainability, a technical note on historical landsliding in Wales, the 2024 GE Awards winners special, and the second part of a technical paper that looks at a tool for the capacity curve of embedded retaining systems. In addition, it includes an Engineering Insight Q&A with Arup geotechnical engineer Sayid Salim, as well as the latest news and opinion. A quick update to my LinkedIn community :-) As a background to the onset of several posts this week, I have been consulting with Urrea Ingeniería, S.A. as they prepared to open a geosynthetic focused business in Phoenix, AZ. Recently, the US Company Terra Geosynthetics was officially incorporated (yay!) and we'll be pushing forward with our business development plan. And, I want to mention (after all of the messages!), that, YES, I am still with FIU as Project Manager for our Coastal Infrastructure Monitoring Project (recapped below). We have been busy growing our team, writing papers, and expanding our network and relationships in South Florida. Stay tuned for many updates as we start to pilot sensor technology in Q1 of 2025. Collaborating with this team over the past 6 months has been both academically engaging and humbling working with all different types of geoscience specialists who really know their craft. We will have our project website up and running soon where you can stay tuned to project progress. Project Recap: Florida International University was awarded a $9.7M grant in September 2023, funded by NOAA, to develop a comprehensive monitoring program to assess the effects of sea-level rise on infrastructure in South Florida. This initiative is groundbreaking in its intent to characterize and enable long-term monitoring of saturated and unsaturated zone hydrology and saltwater intrusion in highly developed near-shore and barrier island environments. The project will consist of selecting several sites in Southeast Florida to install paired barrier island and mainland monitoring transects that can quantify the behavior of groundwater under changing sea-level. This will provide the missing data required to advance understanding and practice of costal infrastructure resiliency.

The Government Office for Science's Future of the Subsurface report has identified key challenges in effectively and sustainably managing the UK's subsurface. The report emphasizes the need for better data availability, accessibility, and quality, as well as improved coordination and regulation to optimize subsurface use for long-term public good. The report notes that while the subsurface will play a crucial role in delivering net zero technologies and climate adaptation measures, implementing cross-sectoral solutions and addressing incomplete and inconsistent regulation remain significant hurdles. To tackle these challenges, the report recommends collecting more comprehensive data, enhancing data accessibility, investing in decision-making tools, and developing technological capabilities. The British Geological Survey and the Geological Society of London have been invited to launch a Community of Interest to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among decision-makers involved in subsurface policy and planning. These recommendations build upon the progress of the National Underground Asset Register (NUAR), a digital platform for sharing underground utility data across the UK. As the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill progresses through Parliament, the geotechnical industry has voiced support for NUAR and its potential to improve subsurface management.
