The legal function historically has behaved as if the world was static. Accordingly: 1) There has long been a wide gap between those needing legal services and those providing them; 2) The establishment of expensive, confusing, and often slow legal processes; 3) A profession intently focused inward on protecting itself rather than on protecting the public. This course cannot hold. I am determined to encourage and support as many as I can who seek to change the course of the legal industry. Legal tech is just one part of how the legal profession's course can and will be changed. The most important part of change, though, is not technology. It is people. The legal profession, being bound by precedent, prior practice, and privilege can resist change. That said, Colin Levy, you may paint with too broad a brush. For example, it’s true that there has long been a gap between those who need legal services and those who provide them, often because of access and income disparity. But it’s also true that innovations in technology have improved and expanded access to the civil justice system, and to services available to solve legal problems, protect legal rights, and promote legal interests. Is there more to do? Absolutely. Is change happening fast enough? Certainly not. But it is happening.
Love this post Colin Levy and completely agree with you. Access to legal services and justice in many practices of the law have historically served the “haves” leaving the other 99% of the population with limited access to legal help and justice. Technology, AI and the people behind the tech are making legal services increasingly accessible and available. Our world is changing for the better. I’m proud to be part of the solution and to help empower everyone with simple and accessible protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights.
