1 April 2019 . . . it marks the start at NLC Health Ventures for me (no Fool's Day joke 😊). Now, 5 years later, I couldn't be more happier with my decision to give up my career as a KPMG partner and join NLC at the time. It's been an incredibly journey. Lots of downs, but even more ups. Bumpy road, building a business/platform together with a great team. But it paid off 📈 🚀 . With 80 FTE (own staff members), blue chip partners, and >100 new companies created since inception in 2015, we are now Europe's largest player in the early stage (see for example the article on the SIFTED platform end of last year: https://lnkd.in/eBvjQgzk). Our investment thesis is simple: 1. The very early stage provides the highest financial returns AND it is where most impact can be realised (ADDITIONALITY = creating something that wasn't there before) 2. To mitigate the idiosyncratic risk, you MUST operate at scale in the early stage (diversification). We create 20-25 new companies per year, as a founder. Our latest fund is going to invest in 80-90 companies with a follow-the-winner strategy 3. Operating at scale provides a learning bedrock (more data ==> better decisions) and attracts better partners, which is a re-inforcing flywheel spinning faster and faster. It's spinning like crazy 😃 4. This can only be achieved by combining a venture builder model (company creation as a founder at our own expense and risk) with own captive funds (investment vehicles providing investors access to the early stage in a responsible way). They belong together and strengthen each other⛓. I am grateful for everyone at NLC for being such a great place to work. Special thanks to NLC's founder/CEO Bert-Arjan Millenaar, who continues to lead NLC with passion, vision and energy, and my other fellow Management Board member Sylvia Butzke (COO) who is a true inspiration to me in the way she organises the business from an operations point of view. What an amazing week in Indianapolis at the RALLY cross-sector innovation conference. Three action packed days. Thank you to Elevate Ventures for the invitation. It reminded me of something Steve Jobs emailed to himself a year before he died, “I grow little of the food I eat… I love and admire my species, living and dead, and am totally dependent on them for my life and well-being.” I spent my time at RALLY learning where there brightest people (and a lot of capital) are being deployed to transform and innovate in healthcare. I walked away very optimistic about our future and proud of our “species,” hence the Steve Jobs quote. At Cambridge Insurance Advisors, we try our best to impersonate Wayne Gretzky’s famous quote “skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.” I wanted to share a few topics from RALLY that are relevant to Cambridge Insurance Advisors and our everyday efforts in healthcare to support business owners and the families covered by their Health & Welfare plans: 1.     AI – where it is working (prior-auths, diagnosis models and care especially to those that lack access to good care, etc.) 2.     AI – where it is NOT working (drug discovery, predicting clinical trial outcomes, etc.) 3.     Value-Based Care: Accountable Care Organizations vs. Managed Service Organizations (success and growth in the MSO model) 4.     Obesity drugs and the engaged consumer (direct to consumer marketing through tech and influencers). PS – wait until the gym/lifting weights replacement drug hits the market!! Why early partners are much more than a logo/number. Working with the team at Klinge Pharma taught me and the Thea Care team the value of treating early partners like colleagues. These are some takeaways: Product: You need partners that openly communicate what really drives value for them. Only then you can build what people want. Empathy: If your partner is truly trying to drive innovation, they know how to communicate expectations realistically and trust you with the execution. Trust: Never downplay the value of openness for established companies to work with startups, as daily realities can very different. Make them happy! You figure out where the trauma hospital helipad could go, and it's not on the hospital roof, and how you get around obstacles and challenges, things that have stopped it from happening before, and previous and current thinking. You use your mind to find all kinds of different type hospitals, and all kinds of things about hospitals, about innovation, ingenuity, difference making and change making.

It is so exciting to see what can happen when you bring powerful people together to accelerate a business that needs to exist - especially when that business is closing a massive health care gap for a massive portion of the population. Today at Operator Collective 🔆 we announced a $5M Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) as a part of our portfolio company Midi Health's oversubscribed Series B round. The OpCo team convened leaders and icons from entertainment, sports, media, beauty and fashion, health and wellness, technology, and business - together more than 80 new investors joined to support Midi's mission and be directly involved in their growth. So proud of our team Mallun Yen, Anna Jacobson, Dana Marohn Spiliotis, Haley Daiber Brannan and Guergana Tomova - and the Midi team Joanna Strober and Jill Herzig to see this important initiative through. And there's just nothing like seeing the OpCo community at work - creating more access points for more women to invest in women and the future of women's health.
