Today is Responsible Dog Ownership Day 🐕 and I’ve been thinking about what it really means to have a dog. It’s not just about keeping them fed and walked - it's about respect, and that goes both ways. We’re responsible for giving our dogs the love, training, and care they need to thrive. In return, they give us so much loyalty, joy, and that unconditional love that only a dog can offer. Respect is really a two-way street, or like two sides of the same coin. It’s not just about taking care of them physically but understanding their needs, communicating, and building a bond that’s based on trust. Responsible ownership is all about that balance - making sure both you and your pup are happy and healthy together. #ResponsibleDogOwnershipDay #MutualRespect #DogLife #DogLovers

September is National Guide Dog Month, an important time to raise awareness about and appreciation for the hard work of these dedicated service animals. Many people assume that a guide dog can navigate the community for someone who is blind. But guide dogs are primarily used to avoid obstacles and keep their human partner safe in their travels. When you encounter a working guide dog on the street or at a restaurant or business, remember that the dog is on the job. Don’t interact with them by petting or giving commands. Don’t allow young children to play with the dog, and don’t attempt to guide, steer or hold a person navigating with a guide dog. These can distract a working guide dog and put both the dog and their person in danger. While the relationship between a guide dog and their person is a working one, it is built on love, trust and discipline, and the bond between the two is invaluable to many people who are blind. I may have mentioned before I’m not a dog or for that matter cat person. However my approach, as it is to life generally is to respect others differing views and I’m happy to have my son’s dog tear arse round our house when he visits, it’s well trained and friendly. As an aside I ask dog owners if I was a contortionist and could lick my private parts would you let me lick your face 🤷♂️. Anyway my question to you pet lovers is this; I heard a story yesterday whilst spending some time with the family about a lady who has a dog, she’s single has met a guy with two kids who are afraid of, don’t like the dog. The lady is moving in with the guy and his kids so is giving the dog away. Do you find this reasonable or totally unacceptable? As my boys were born I accept I moved from hopefully No 1 in my wife’s affections to No 3 but if a dog had pushed me to No 4 I think I’d have been off. Does your partner love a dog/cat as much or more than you and if so are you OK with this? Just asking as someone who understands what pets bring to many but struggles with how they replace humans in some people’s lives. #pets #preferences #people

Service dogs are more common and provide a variety of support functions for their owners. Even when wearing a distinctive vest with "service dog" markings/warnings, owners still deal with people who see the service dog merely as a pet and unknowingly distract the dog from its job. Out of respect to the owners of service animals, and those trained for service, please be considerate and consider these tips: #servicedogs #serviceanimals

The Yellow Dog campaign helps raise awareness for the general public about dogs that need some space when out on walks Not ever dog can be off lead; not every dog is ok with having other dogs approach them and not every dog wants interaction with other people or dogs. This can be for a number of reasons - the dog has had a bad experience with another dog so is scared/anxious; the dog may be in the middle of training, or simply a dog that may not like other dogs. Many rescue dogs are still settling into their new environments. The dog will already be over stimulated so by adding something yellow, allows their owners to hopefully signal that the dog needs space to others. If you come across someone who has something yellow on their dog (harness; lead; collar or a sign) please stop and think about approaching with your dog. Always ask the dog owner before approaching; they will be only too happy to explain. Also please note they know their dog better than you do because please be respectful if they ask you to step away with your dog. They may be trying to socialise their dog in areas to build confidence and also it is not always possible to avoid other dogs on each dog walk. They are trying to keep their dog safe and would not want the added responsibility of having to worry about your dog too. For more information on the campaign or please check out their site: https://lnkd.in/eWVSZBjW. #responsibledogownership #yellowdogcampaign #rescuedogs

Loving dogs is easy. Respecting them? That’s where the real bond begins. A few years ago, I had the joy of visiting Cruft’s—a paradise for dog lovers. Surrounded by hundreds of incredible dogs, it felt like a dream come true. As much as I wanted to pet every single one of them, I made sure to ask both the owner and the dog for permission first. Yes, the dog too. Here’s why this matters: I’ve noticed so many well-meaning dog lovers reaching out to touch dogs without thinking twice. But having a passion for dogs doesn’t give us the right to invade their space. Think about it. Just as you wouldn’t appreciate being touched without your consent, dogs feel the same. Respecting their boundaries isn’t just kind—it’s essential for building trust and ensuring they feel safe. So, the next time you see an adorable dog, pause. Ask the owner. Let the dog sniff your hand, observe their body language, and wait for a clear sign of comfort before you proceed. This simple act of respect can change how dogs view us and deepen the bond we share with them. Do you have a story of a dog teaching you about boundaries or trust? #doglovers #respectdogs #buildingtrust
