💭 Megan Hunt, chief people officer at AWE Nuclear Security Technologies, explores how organisations can win in the race for the best engineering talent by inspiring professionals early in their careers. "Attracting top talent requires nurturing an engineer’s skills development from the very beginning of their career. By investing in education and training programmes, and providing clear pathways for progression, employers can ensure their engineers are equipped to tackle future challenges and help position an organisation at the forefront of the engineering sector," writes Hunt. "Looking at the bigger picture, encouraging young talent to pursue engineering plays a vital role in accelerating innovation and reaching national sustainability goals. Ultimately, this proactive approach fosters a workforce that will drive long-term success for the industry." Yesterday, I attended the Greenjob Career Fair at MGTC, where I had the opportunity to meet YB Nik Nazmi, Minister of Natural Resources. During our conversation, I reflected on Malaysia's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions based on the NETR policies. I wondered whether this goal could be achieved without incorporating nuclear energy for electricity generation, considering that nuclear energy would eliminate the need for fossil fuels and provide a clean energy alternative. I seized the moment to directly ask YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad whether Malaysia is considering the use of nuclear energy for electricity generation. Here is his response.

I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Intern at Engie Tractebel TRACTEBEL in the nuclear department -Core and Fuel . The aim of my internship is to solve complex problems involving the loading and arrangement of hundreds spent fuels assemblies in dry cast storage using mathematical optimization methods such as linear programming and constraint programming.

Six weeks ago I hit the two year mark with Nuclear Restoration Services. That’s a drop in the ocean compared to the service of the majority of my colleagues. Here are some observations that many will know, but others won’t. - We have an unbelievably committed and wise workforce. Their experience and depth of knowledge continues to blow me away. - I can honestly say we put safety front and centre. I’ve seen no lip service. - Working in an environment with an annual funding cycle can be a real challenge (being polite here!), particularly with complex multi-year/decade programmes of work. Plans are made, remade and remade again subject to the political and economic landscape. This makes efficient delivery of world first decommissioning projects even tougher. - We have a real opportunity to upskill our management teams to develop a culture where coaching and empowerment can create an environment where people can freely innovate, discovering new and better ways of working. - The UK nuclear industry faces the challenge of trying to find an additional 80,000 people in the next two decades. We have much to do to ensure we are leading the sector to upskill/retrain our existing people, bolster our graduate and apprenticeship programmes, and attract people who’ve already established themselves in another sector to join our sector. Excited to share this opportunity with you. Feel free to share with your networks... The IAEA Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme (MSCFP) next application call is scheduled to open in mid-July 2024 and will close by end of September 2024. To read more about the programme and eligibility requirements, please visit the link: IAEA Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme | IAEA and Information for applicants | IAEA. The dates of the upcoming application period will be noted on the IAEA website soon. The IAEA Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme (MSCFP) was launched in 2020 by the IAEA Director General to increase the number of women in the nuclear field, supporting an inclusive workforce of men and women who contribute to and drive global scientific and technological innovation. The programme aims to inspire and encourage women to pursue a career in the nuclear related field, by providing highly motivated female students with scholarships for master’s programmes and an opportunity to pursue an internship facilitated by the IAEA. Scholarships are awarded annually. In the selection of students, consideration is given to geographic and field of study diversity, in addition to eligibility requirements and other criteria. The selected students are awarded up to €20,000 for tuition costs and up to €20,000 for living costs for their master’s programme (the amount will vary depending on the duration of the programme, costs associated with tuition as well as location of the studies). Upon completion of their studies, students who pursue an internship facilitated by the IAEA, in line with their specialization in the nuclear field, are also provided with a stipend for up to 12 months. The internships may take place at the IAEA or in nuclear organizations in the public or private sector. Additionally, students are provided with opportunities to attend and participate in various educational, professional, and networking events. MSCFP recipients also have a chance to become a part of the programme’ s LinkedIn Student and Alumni Group where they can connect with their peers and exchange knowledge and experience, as well as find out about technical events and career opportunities. Since its launch in 2020, MSCFP has received 2271 applications, selecting 560 students from 121 nationalities studying in 72 countries worldwide. By end of March 2024, 201 students have already completed their master’s programme with support of MSCFP. From these graduates, 110 have been confirmed for an internship facilitated by the IAEA at the IAEA departments and labs (Seibersdorf and Monaco), IAEA Collaborating Centres, and other nuclear organizations in the public or private sector in various countries. Contact MSCFP@iaea.org for further inquiries. #mscfp #education #younggirlsinSTEM #Scholarships

"What do you plan to do after your Fellowship in 2025?" While most AAAS Fellows come from a host institution such as a national lab or university and leave on temporary sabbatical to work in DC, I had to fully separate from my private industry job to comply with ethics rules. So, I will be a free agent come January 2025 which is both exciting and a bit nerve wracking! Here are some options I am exploring: 1) 🌎 International Work - I've wanted to spend time abroad for personal growth since college, but financial factors during my studies and COVID19 when I began my career disrupted my plans. ¿ Quizás hay oportunidades para trabajar en España como ingeniero nuclear 🤔 ? 2) 🎓 Further Education - Working on Capitol Hill surrounded by national leaders working on complex issues in every discipline really inspires me to keep learning. The question remains - what program, and where? 3) ⚛ Entrepreneurship - There's such a huge demand for nuclear expertise with the growth in demand for nuclear energy, and there are dozens of federal programs I've learned about that support businesses in the nuclear sector. I'm curious to see if I can better serve the needs of the nuclear sector through entrepreneurial work than the traditional job hunt. If you come across any opportunities in these areas, please send them my way and I'll take a look. I will say, with absolute certainty, I will be taking a vacation before taking my next step 😎! For now, enjoy this photo of the Capitol taken last Sunday.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐃? "𝑻𝒐 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒂 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒐𝒓!" Isn't it the common and only answer that everyone gives when it comes to career options after completing PhD? Or isn't the only option most of the people are aware of? Well, if we see closely, we start anything and everything by doing a little research to get better idea about it! And anything in this world whether big nuclear defence or small like making a candy, everywhere we need good researchers. So, in my opinion, a researcher has wide career opportunities after completing their PhDs. Like, 1) 𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒚 𝑷𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 (𝑵𝒐 𝒅𝒐𝒖𝒃𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕) 2) 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒔 3) 𝑮𝒐𝒗𝒕.
