Have you seen Reese Witherspoon’s video where she calls out the classic line in films, “What do we do now?” - a phrase that subtly portrays women as hesitant or dependent? It’s such a common theme, but many of us may not have even noticed it until she pointed it out.
This got me thinking: how often does this same dynamic play out in STEM? Too often, the structures around us nudge us to wait for direction, seek approval, or let someone else take the lead. There’s also the double standard where women who are ambitious and take charge are often judged more harshly than their male counterparts. This bias can make us hesitant to step forward and lead, even when we have the skills and vision to do so.
But what if we flipped the script? Just like Reese envisions female characters driving the story forward, we have the power to redefine the narrative in STEM. Instead of waiting for permission, we can take bold action, make decisions, and lead innovation.
Think about it: in the story of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, women are not side characters, we are the protagonists! Let’s make sure our leadership and ideas take centre stage.
What’s one step you can take this week to rewrite the story for yourself and inspire others in STEM? Let’s lead the way.

Synopsys is proud to celebrate #GlobalDiversityAwarenessMonth!🌐 Across our company we are focusing on the power of allyship, promoting 💭curiosity, 💪courage, and 🤝trust.
#Curiosity fuels understanding. By taking the time to learn about other’s experiences, think beyond assumptions, and open doors to empathy.
#Courage empowers us to take actions. Getting comfortable being uncomfortable, interrupting bias, and learning from mistakes are integral to creating a safe environment that drives inclusivity.
#Trust helps build relationships. When we create safe spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued, we foster a culture of belonging and respect.
When we build diverse teams and actively practice allyship, we’re not just supporting individuals, we’re creating a better future for everyone.
Curious about why we struggle to embrace a vision?
Surprise—it's our minds seeking safety in the familiar.
Not having a vision feels safe. It's our comfort zone, our cozy nook. Our minds trick us into thinking it's a protective shield, but in reality, it's a stationary bubble.
Vision is a passport to the future, but not having one keeps us anchored in the present. The lack of a vision might seem harmless, but it stealthily robs us of time and growth.
Break the chains of the illusion of safety. Having a vision isn't about diving into uncertainty; it's about soaring into possibilities.
