I'm winding down my time at SXSW this week. There have been some real highs and lows. I'll share more soon, but one thing that stands out is the difference between celebrating an idea and pushing one. Celebrating comes from a place of joy. You've worked on something a million different ways, and it's working! You know the idea inside and out, you believe in it, you've seen it impact people, and you want to share it with others. If they enjoy it, great! If they don't, it's okay. You learn from them and then look for others who care to make it better with you. Pushing comes from a place of desperation. You need this to work. Your identity depends on it. You need the validation, the "win," or the output—and you need it fast. If you don't get it, you feel lost or scared. You don't really care about the long-term impact it has on someone's life or work; you need something from the person across from you right now. Both of these require a great amount of work: promoting, sharing, speaking, inviting, leading, early mornings, late nights, and everything in between. But the former comes with a dose of joy and possibility that's contagious, while the latter comes with dread and fear that's draining. SXSW brings both kinds of people across every type of industry—from entertainment and tech, to workplace and wellness. The best sessions are when someone has worked to invite you into something they're celebrating. They prepare thoughtfully and try to help you experience it. The worst sessions have been the ones where someone is just trying to push their thing by talking at you the entire time or spending an inordinate amount of time talking about their work and company before getting into the session they described. “Come curious, leave inspired” #FestivalOfWork CIPD festival of work certainly delivered – I was curious 👀and definitely left inspired 💡. Huge amount of content to engage with – with 7 themed stages/topics to chose from, over 180 exhibitors and range of festival activities – loved the wellbeing village! What did I take away: 🐾 “Cuddle club” – the dog therapy zone was a hit, with a never-ending queue of people waiting to pat one of the gorgeous dogs 🍦Rolled ice-cream – people will wait in line (myself included…) for over 45 mins for ‘free’ ice-cream (it was very nice but possibly not worth the wait), people did wait longer to pat the dogs though 🧦Socks – are the new SWAG option, love that it’s practical and yes I grabbed 2 pairs The serious work-related take aways: 🌈Inclusion by design – loved that the event had teletext options for presentations so that everyone could engage and learn 🎮System demos – perfect timing if you’re about to change/tender for new HR systems – all the providers in one place to get a feel for their approach and offering 📈Data – make sure you are challenging yourself as to what you are going to do with the data and what story do you want to tell/explain with it 🎬Become an ‘active bystander’ – we need to make a conscious decision to act and ‘make it our problem’, so that we can normalise addressing poor behaviours ⛑️Benefits – there isn’t a one-size fits all approach, ensure you have a range of flexible options to support people through different life stages I’m curious – what did other Festival goers reflect on and take away?
