As an Executive board member of the USA for UNFPA’s Board of Directors, I’m proud to say that this GivingTuesday I am supporting global efforts to end violence against women and girls. Safety from violence is a human right – and yet, 1 in 3 women have experienced sexual and physical violence at some point in their lives. This violence takes many different forms, including domestic violence, violence from family members, and harmful practices such as child marriage and female genital mutilation. However, today in Australia, too many women cannot access a fundamental human right. The right to choose. Did you know that Medicare only provides 15% of funding for abortion? Today is IDAHOBIT DAY. A day to raise awareness of discrimination faced by LGBTIQA+ communities. However, I think that awareness is not enough. We need to move it towards action to address these issues. Everyday, trans young people face extraordinary levels of discrimination where their agency and rights are stripped away, as they are belittled, abused and disempowered by people, groups and the systems in which they exist in. These are similar experiences to other marginalised groups, particularly women and people living with disabilities. They are the same strategies being deployed to harm other groups. The level of transphobia in Australia and globally is reaching an all time high, with highly resourced anti trans lobby groups and political leaders misleading the general public on what it means to be transgender and the harms that children face. There are regular and current live threats to healthcare here in Australia and to the public spaces that trans young people inhabit. The recent Federal budget made ZERO commitment towards tailored community led early intervention support programs for one of the most vulnerable groups of young people in Australia. Yet, it will be their lives and realities that will be used for political gain at every upcoming state and federal election. People with influence and decision making powers are aware of this already, so when will we move to taking action?
