Manufacturing in Australia is critical to value adding to certain natural resources, and the new Future Made in Australia legislation goes part way to achieving this. However, attempting to smear the engine room of the economy is blind to the global economics and the economics that the resources contribute to the regions. It’s this belligerence that has led to the formation of Coal Australia and the continued great work of Queensland Resources Council, AusIMM and The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia.

New legislation was introduced today to strengthen and protect Queensland’s progressive coal royalties.   The Progressive Coal Royalties Protection Bill 2024 ensures Parliamentary consideration is required for any proposed changes to decrease coal royalty rates, given the importance it plays to Queenslanders and the Queensland economy.   The additional revenue raised from coal royalties, including the new tiers, has allowed the government to invest more than $16 billion in critical economic and social infrastructure and essential services across all regions of the state, including in coal producing regions. Today we’re at the High Court challenging the government’s approval of the Whitehaven coal mine in Cumbria.    If the mine goes ahead, it will be the UK’s first new deep coal mine for over 30 years 🤯 The mine’s lifetime emissions - mostly from burning the coal - would amount to more than half of the UK’s total emissions in 2022.     The government withdrew its defence of the legal challenge last week, admitting that the coal mine was approved unlawfully following the historic Horse Hill Supreme Court ruling last month which we helped win.     Together, South Lakes Action on Climate Change and Friends of the Earth are arguing the mine's climate impacts were not properly considered and its approval was unlawful.    We need to see investment in renewable energy and home insulation, which has the potential to deliver hundreds of local green jobs, not a dying fossil fuel industry. ICYMI a milestone very much worth recognising and celebrating today. As the report shows all the needed success factors came together to make the remarkable goal of eliminating the UK's reliance on burning coal for power a reality. Here are 4: - Growing investment into, and availability of, alternative fuel sources - Legislation ending the new supply of coal fired plants - Pricing the externality of coal, changing the business case - e.g. cost of carbon and concerns over air quality on public health - Government policy coordinated to give industry time to plan and act The real estate sector stands to benefit, but can also learn lessons from this sector wide transformation. No more coal? It can be done! The UK - from first country to establish a coal plant to the first to phase it out entirely. How? Includes shared medium-term targets, no new investment and market mechanisms to tip the economics in favour of other energy sources by pricing externalities (like the cost of air pollution).
