An absolutely positive article ‘from the voice of a young person who is vision impaired’ sharing how motivation and determination, combined with appropriate mentoring, and in school support - incorporating adaptations enables, the young person to have “agency “ in their positive future! This article and video clearly shows the key benefits of how new opportunities, equitable access to support and adaptation, can empower the young person to aspire to their strengths and have a positive mindset for a future, where they have a clear direction, real goals. Here is a positive example of the power of a role model with a lived experience, sharing his experiences for young people who are blind and vision impaired and professionals to hear! The above ‘access’ provisions too are well supported through the Curriculum Franework (UK) supporting specialist QTVI/ teacher knowledge, now a clear guide for teachers, schools (even for those not specialist in VI) and parents, The format is sequential and very easy to follow, showing the key areas for adaptation and access. The revised framework demonstrates core areas to extend students opportunities and learning and living. Young people who are blind or vision impaired in settings like at Royal National College RNC, get opportunities as articulated sharing their own strategies, the power of “like able , like minded” Thistlethwaite 2021, where “access to learning” and “learning to access” are a norm, McLindrn et al, 2019. This is evidence that a positive mindset, guided professional input, and being around like minded peers, truly motivates young people who are blind, vision. impaired to aspire, seek and attain their end goals of a full and active life beyond school, where they are fulfilled, be it through study, leisure, work having inclusive roles in their community! In supporting a young person’s aspirations, parents, educators, and leaders too need to know there is a ‘real’ and ‘accessible ’ pathway for all young people who are blind, vision impaired and or with additional support needs. We need to be the “agents of change ” McLinden et al, 2019, who can promote and navigate meaningful pathways through our own lived, or professional knowledge and experience, walking alongside young people who are blind and vision impaired. It is also imperative we continue to inform, promote accessibiiity requirements to statutory agencies, local and central government bodies, who set the guidelines in education, health, social services and community access. Too many budding young people who are blind and vision impaired get lost post school, ending up isolated with no clear direction once they lose the connectedness at school, through contact with their school QTVIs,TVIs RTVs and Hab teams, Sadly this is an international trend….
Happy #GlobalAccessibilityAwarenessDay! 19-year-old Jay is studying for a Diploma in Sporting Excellence at the Royal National College for the Blind and he loves playing sports. When he was 4-years-old he was diagnosed with a degenerative vision impairment and was blind at age 13. He had good support in lessons at school but was regularly sent to the gym instead of being allowed to join in with sports. Now he plays Blind Football at college and he’s on the England Talent Pathway which may mean he gets to be a full senior player in the future. The experience has brought him many opportunities and boosted his confidence and sense of purpose. The Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment (CFVI) identifies the importance of providing access to adapted sports activities where the young person can fully participate and work towards competing at a high level if they wish. As Jay says, “I feel I’ve got a goal in life again.” Please watch and share Jay’s story: https://lnkd.in/e8pWdYQS Help make sport accessible and unlock education for all. #UnlockingEducation #CFVI For more information on the CFVI please visit our website: https://lnkd.in/d-8Rk8uM RNIB The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association University of Birmingham

I am in the midst of final grading, and as I was reading student reflections, one stood out to me. This particular PBL assignment focused on bias in student evaluations, designed to help students understand the concept of DEI and its accompanying challenges and opportunities. One student captured the essence of PBL and how it creates valuable outcomes: "Diversity, equity, and inclusion programs are shaping future generations to coexist and collaborate better at the workplace, school, and society. DEI is something I am grateful Oakton College embraces and promotes students to acknowledge. DEI programs such as Oakton’s ANDALE and TRIO have personally helped me navigate the college transfer process and have connected me with vital resources that enrich my educational experience." This student's reflection was grounded and authentic. They were able to exercise agency and become active participants in the learning process, because PBL isn't just about completing tasks; it's about fostering deep learning and cultivating essential skills. By tackling real-world challenges, students like this one gain invaluable insights and develop critical thinking, collaboration, and communication abilities. At Oakton, we believe in High-Impact Practices like PBL, a particularly powerful framework for ensuring students master learning objectives (LOs) while developing the competencies they need to succeed. #PBL #HigherEducation #StudentSuccess #DEI #Equity #Inclusion #ProblemBasedLearning #ProjectBasedLearning #HigherEducation"
