CLINT at American Geophysical Union! 🌍 Climate change is driving an alarming increase in the frequency and severity of extreme events such as floods, hurricanes, droughts, and heatwaves. These events cause devastating human and economic impacts, with global damages averaging $167 billion annually over the past four decades. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful tool to address these challenges. While many AI methods show promise, their practical advantages over traditional approaches are often underexplored. To bridge this gap, we propose the "Climate Intelligence" framework—a new approach to develop AI tools that directly address user needs and deliver measurable benefits for #climateservices. Our process involves: 1️⃣ Identifying user-specific climate challenges. 2️⃣ Tailoring AI solutions to these problems. 3️⃣ Applying and scaling solutions locally and continentally. 4️⃣ Quantifying their multisector impact compared to traditional methods. Let’s harness the power of AI to protect our future. 🌱 📅 Where to find us: Salon G (Convention Center) 📍 Let us know if you’ll be there or if you’d like to discuss further! https://lnkd.in/dQapjfCN Guido Ascenso Matteo Giuliani Andrea Castelletti #AGU24 #ClimateScience #Heatwaves

Day 11 in our AI Sustainability exploration: AI’s predictive power on climate change is a beacon, guiding our journey towards a future where we live in harmony with the natural world, respecting its limits and learning from its resilience. #Day11 #ClimatePrediction Here's a 3 step method on how to make this practical: Assemble a dream team: to tackle a complex challenge like climate change, you'll need to assemble a crack team of experts. This would include AI specialists, climate scientists, meteorologists, engineers, and policymakers. Build a powerful AI for climate prediction: This would be your JARVIS for climate change. Your team would develop a powerful AI that can process massive amounts of climate data - past weather patterns, greenhouse gas concentrations, ocean currents, and land-use changes. The AI would continuously learn and improve its predictive capabilities, providing highly accurate forecasts of future climate trends. Global climate solutions platform & war room : Develop a central platform that integrates the AI's predictions with real-time environmental data and simulates the effects of different mitigation strategies. This platform would be accessible to policymakers, scientists, and the public. A dedicated war room staffed by your team would analyze the data, develop actionable plans to address predicted climate threats, and communicate these plans effectively to encourage global cooperation. #ai #sustainability #exploration

How AI is Redefining Our Understanding of History and Climate 🌡️ Artificial intelligence has proven its ability to solve complex problems, but its recent application to historical climate data is a game-changer. Researchers used AI to uncover previously undetected extreme weather events, like a severe cold spell in 1929 and a heatwave in 1911, that traditional methods had missed. What’s remarkable is how AI reconstructed climate data in regions and periods where observations were sparse, filling in the gaps with high-resolution insights. This isn’t just about refining our historical knowledge; it’s about creating tools that can shape future climate adaptation strategies. This breakthrough is a powerful reminder of how AI is revolutionizing industries beyond the tech sphere, transforming how we approach challenges in healthcare, climate science, and beyond. If AI can unlock the hidden stories of our past, imagine what it can do to help us prepare for the future. This is just the beginning. Our World needs scientists implementing their research on Mother Nature in order to inspire the youths to study natural sciences and explore more solutions to protect our Earth.
A new AI tool has been unveiled in the fight to protect Australia's iconic Great Barrier Reef. Working with thousands of high-resolution photographs taken by divers, La Trobe's AI experts have been able to produce a 'digital twin' of the reef — ultra-detailed, precise and manipulable from all angles. Developed in a partnership between the Australian Institute of Marine Science, the photorealistic models offer researchers an unprecedented degree of detail in measuring how corals change, grow and respond to the impacts of climate change. 'By leveraging La Trobe’s home-grown, cutting-edge #AI technology, we aim to answer questions around how climate change may impact the structure of coral reefs,' says Professor Wei Xiang, Director of the Cisco-La Trobe Centre for AI and Internet of Things. 'This will pave the way for more effective restoration strategies.' Learn more about how the technology - dubbed 'Reef-NeRF' (Neural Radiance Field) - is improving on decades-old modeling processes: https://lnkd.in/g5is3gvp #latrobeuni #climatescience #greatbarrierreef

🌍💻 AI is Digging Up Hidden Climate History! What happens when AI dives into decades of weather data? It uncovers stories we didn’t even know were there! Researchers found a massive cold spell 🧊 in 1929 and a heatwave🔥 in 1911 that had been overlooked—until now. Their tool, CRAI (Climate Reconstruction AI), outperformed old-school methods, especially in places where data was missing. It’s like climate detective work, helping us understand the past to prepare for the future. This is like what we’re doing in clinical informatics—using AI to fill data gaps, predict outcomes, and make smarter decisions. Are there lessons from AI in climate science that healthcare can use? AI is amazing, but let’s not forget—it’s only as good as the data we feed it, so we’ve gotta stay sharp to avoid jumping to the wrong conclusions. 🤔 https://lnkd.in/eMSPHzAe
