Joint receivers of 4 Academy awards, 6 BAFTA awards and 9 Golden Globes. And best known for the versatility and emotional intensity they bring through their characters Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman didn’t shared the same bed of roses before they rose to significance. Back in their struggling artists days both were good friends. One day Hoffman invited Hackman to his house. After meet and greet the host asked his guest for a loan. Hackman agreed to the loan but then they went into Hoffman’s kitchen. That’s when Hackman noticed several mason jars lined up on the counter, each containing money. One jar was labelled “rent”, another was labelled “utilities” and so forth. Confused Hackman asked Hoffman why, if Hoffman had so much money in jars , he could possibly need a loan. Upon which Hoffman pointed out the food jar which was empty. What this exchange beautifully captures is the scheme of Mental Accounting. Money is “fungible قابل تبادلہ” . As economics (or simple logic) dictates, it comes without a manual, what it should be utilized for. To suppress the temptation to use it without recourse is to adopt systems that makes its utilization dedicated. Why is this important? Because our spending habits make us susceptible to infallibility. Are we not always ‘Busy but seldom ‘Effective’? Our spending habits fall in the same order. Anyone who has ever worked in Purchase and Procurement for example has experienced the frustration of falling short of making an important purchase because the organization allocated budget over several activities and the relevant account has depleted or insufficient reserves. And the room for replenishing is closed for any new replenish will mean undercutting another account. Remaining liquid while living within Budget, turned out to have a Surprisingly Simple Solution!
