I just found out, today is National Pickle Day! Perhaps that is not a big dill for you but here are some friendly reminders from HR on this day to ensure you don't end up in a sour situation... 1) Give thanks - We are in the season of thankfulness and, equal to that, we are also in a rush. As we find ourselves speeding to complete everything by years end, don't forget to take the time to appreciate those around you for what they do. Take a break and grab some coffee together, people and the time you give them are most important. 2) Plan & Prioritize - With the holidays coming, employees are taking time off. Take the time now to prioritize what must be accomplished now and what is best planned for Q1. Sometimes launching a project to kick off the year coincides with a fresh start. 3) Disconnect - Sure when it comes to work you could be described as the bread & butter of the department but, you'll become a sour pickle if you don't take time to recharge. Let's set the record straight. 📣 Recently an article was published by the Daily Mail on the British supermarket chain, Asda's "4 day work week". The article's headline read, "Asda ditches four-day week - after staff complained the new system of 11-hour shifts was leaving them too tired" The trial that took place meant that staff were working 44 hours over 4 days. Of course they were exhausted and wanted it to end! This is not a 4 day work week that we support. Asda trialled a compressed work week - when staff work the hours they are already working, except in less days. A 4 day work week should involve a meaningful reduction in work-time. We propose a 20% reduction that follows our 100-80-100™ principle - 100% pay for 80% time for 100% productivity. 4 day week benefits are realised for the employee and the organization when: - you meaningfully reduce work-time - enable employees to complete their work in less time by cutting down on meetings, removing unnecessary work and providing useful tools and technology As the 4 day week movement grows, we must be wary of these types of headlines which falsely paint work-time reduction in a bad light. The initiative that Asda engaged in was not work-time reduction, so they did not see the benefits and it wasn't a positive change for their staff. Asda has announced this week that it's pulling the four day week trial from the 20 test stores. People reported high levels of exhaustion and were unable to capitalise on the 'free' day due to over-work and tiredness. Is anyone really surprised by this bubble-burst for the short week movement? With rumblings of a Labour-led move towards a shorter working week, the questions that the Asda findings raise are critical to work through and ratify before any major leaps into the four-into-five concept. For me, there are three main issues to consider: 1. Most of us are already at capacity, so either we drop things, or cram it all into a shorter timeframe. Neither are sensible or sustainable. So either we reduce what people do (but still pay them the same) or find ways to radically streamline and simplify the working world. Let's be honest, we've been trying solve that last one for a generation. 2. For many organisations, it won't be cost effective. Asda is a good example of the challenge that many companies can face. The grocery trade is a low margin business, and every penny counts. So the option of hiring more people isn't commercially viable. Therefore, as they tried, you just have to make the four working days much longer. This has been my bug-bear all the way through the debate - only certain industries can sustain a short week. Service, health, academia, transport etc will all see major cost increases if they implement the policy and stick with it. Cue a massive inflation hike. 3. It's lazy thinking to just bunch up the time into one day, and won't work for many. It doesn't map onto school days, it adds more pressure to the working days for those who need to provide support and care for others, and fails to recognise the current thinking around flex working (read How The Future Works to get the best views on this). If we want to ease the pressure on people, I firmly believe we need a smarter, more nuanced approach that combines efficient working, flexible approaches to how people manage their day and leaders well-versed in the art of creating cultures that enable sustainable, happy teams. Let's not just lop a day off the week and hope we fit everything into what's left.

Leaders and HR, As the monsoon season brings continuous heavy rains, it has become increasingly challenging and sometimes hazardous for employees to commute. Many of our team members do not have cars and cannot afford the higher daily cab fares, especially with apps like Uber and OLA increasing their rates during heavy rains. Some employees even have to walk to the office due to limited transportation options. In light of these circumstances, I kindly request your understanding and flexibility: - Please do not deduct salaries for late arrivals caused by traffic delays. - Consider allowing work-from-home requests during these difficult days. Let us prioritize the safety and well-being of our employees. It is our responsibility to ensure they feel supported during these times. Remember, "SAFETY" is more important than "WORK."

I haven't touched on this for a while, and as some of you may already know, I am a long time advocate for the 4 day week (global) initiative. I am not an advocate for compressing a 5 day week worth of hours into a 4 day week. That is not the supported concept or format of this initiative, nor would ever add in the benefits that the 4 Day Week - Global data shows. The latter is likely to burn your people, hurt your productivity and is approaching a reduction in days for non sustainable benefits. If you are interested in the excellent people and productivity benefits that this initiative can support, when piloted and run correctly, then there is plenty of information and data to help you understand more. The headlines of the article shown here (in regard to Asda) is discussing the full time hours compression model - hence it flopped! #nosurprisestherethen😉 It may challenge your thinking to head outside the traditional outlines of work rules and some courage sprinkled with a futuristic mindset. But if you are open to being a little risky, and with people at your heart, then I invite you to do your research and check out the findings from the many pilots and company/organisation implementations Worldwide. Who knows...it may be part of your companys future. How cool would that be?
