Google is now testing ads in AI overviews😍 When an ad fits both the search query and the AI overview (Search Generative Experience), it will appear in the overview in a "sponsored" section. This update marks one of Google’s first steps toward monetizing its AI investments across consumer products like Search. By integrating ads directly into AI-generated content(SGE), Google aims to create a seamless experience for users while providing advertisers with new opportunities to reach their target audience. No action is required from advertisers—existing Search, Performance Max, and Shopping campaigns will automatically be eligible. Last week, Google introduced the first generative AI image tool inside the ad product called Demand Gen. A dive into Google’s rules shows that it is purposely avoiding AI-generated humans. The rules are likely meant to keep AI on a tight leash for now, as brands are still figuring out how to incorporate generative AI into their ads and want to be careful not to create assets that could offend people, according to advertising leaders who have tested Google’s Demand Gen.

A corporatized and profit-driven #GenAI seeking more efficient ways to influence and drive eyeballs can be used to create and disseminate disinformation more quickly and efficiently than ever before. What could and should be a revolution in our ability to analyze data could instead be used to amplify and automate the worst aspects of our society, removing accountability in the process. "AI will help reinforce viral content that emerges from social media. It will be able to create websites and web content, user reviews, and smartphone apps. It will be able to simulate thousands, or even millions, of fake personas to give the mistaken impression that an idea, or a political position, or use of a product, is more common than it really is. What we might perceive to be vibrant political debate could be bots talking to bots. And these capabilities won’t be available just to those with money and power; the AI tools necessary for all of this will be easily available to us all."
