Last week’s Loneliness Awareness Week theme was ‘Random Acts of Connection’ where everyone was encouraged to increase their everyday moments of connection so that we can all feel happier and less lonely. Exchanging a smile or making small talk with a stranger can uplift you. Research shows these micro connections can significantly affect our happiness and sense of belonging.   A Travelodge survey of 2000 people found that 42% of adults felt their day became extra special when a stranger did something nice unexpectedly for them and it encouraged them to want to do something nice for others. So let’s carry on making these small simple friendly gestures throughout the year as these are important for how socially connected we feel, bringing us more security and meaning to life. We will not only help ourselves but also help others manage the feeling of loneliness.
