This past week was National Roundabouts Week in the U.S. Across the country, there are over 10,000 roundabouts, some states even have a "roundabout first" policy, prioritizing them in roadway intersection designs to help improve safety. For instance, changing a two-way intersection with stop signs to a roundabout can reduce fatal and injury crashes by 82 percent. A roundabout is just one of many road elements addressed by the Complete Streets design model used by transportation planners and engineers to consistently plan, design, operate, and maintain the entire roadway networks with all users in mind. It got me thinking about the bigger picture—context is key, but what do people think without knowing the full story and just going by the image alone? 𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲?  With the machine straddled on the road and pavement, how does/could this impact pedestrians, especially those who might have difficulty navigating around it? 𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹?  Double yellow lines usually mean no parking—does this apply here, or are there exceptions for construction vehicles that make this okay? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆?  In busy urban areas, how can we better manage these situations to balance the needs of construction with the safety and convenience of the public? In 2021, I did a research project on the relationship between the presence of street trees on Portland roads and the incidence of collisions and presented my findings to the ITE Conference. The analysis demonstrated that neighborhoods with more street trees saw significantly fewer collisions along roadway segments. Today, Portland is planning for a significant overhaul of SE 82nd Avenue, planting trees along both sides and in the median of the roadway, with the express purpose of using trees to reduce roadway speeds and reduce collisions. AUSTRALIA: The government of New South Wales has a new pavement marking trial underway on a mountain road just south of Sydney. The “Glow Roads” project tests the use of photoluminescent markings which absorb sunlight during the day and emit light at night.
