The challenges facing policing today are ingrained in the traditions of the profession itself—issues like cultural inertia, the "us versus them" mindset, and old school approaches to crime control. When senior leaders are selected from within, these patterns tend to persist. Holly Campeau's research supports this: Promoting from within often reinforces the very practices that need reforming. (Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eKKfGYD) So, what’s the alternative? Think outside the box and look beyond traditional pipelines for leadership. An external candidate, untainted by decades of institutional influence, is far more likely to: ✔️ Introduce innovative strategies. ✔️ Promote diversity of thought and experience. ✔️ Tackle cultural challenges with fresh eyes. That's not to say that there aren't strong leaders within the ranks already, but VPD have a unique opportunity to lead by example here by appointing a chief constable who isn’t afraid to disrupt the status quo. Who's ready to lead the future of policing?
