The City of Brantford recognizes the importance of involving citizens in the development of City policies, programs and services and are committed to ensuring there is a range of opportunities for the community to provide input on issues that matter to them most. Today, we’re excited to launch a new Community Engagement Campaign designed to gather feedback from residents on how they want to be involved in important City decisions, particularly regarding the future of City-owned assets. The information we gather will inform an update to the City’s current Community Involvement Framework with the goal of doing a better job reaching our residents and ensuring you’re aware of how to share your input on issues you care about. Whether it’s improving parks, enhancing infrastructure, or shaping key policies, your input is essential to creating a stronger, more inclusive community. Running until February 28, 2025, the campaign includes a range of diverse engagement opportunities such as surveys, public forums, and in-person events. Residents will have the chance to provide input at popular community events, City-hosted programs, and three dedicated public consultation meetings in January and February 2025. Key components of the campaign include: ✅ Surveys and Online Engagement whereby residents can provide input through the City’s Let’s Talk Brantford engagement portal. ✅ Public Engagement booths at events including Brantford Bulldogs home games and public skates at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre. ✅ Public Consultation Meetings scheduled for January 18, January 30, and February 13. Residents are encouraged to participate in the campaign by attending events, completing the survey, and sharing their ideas. For more information, visit Let’s Talk Brantford. Community engagement is a collaborative process that involves working with community members, stakeholders, and organisations to address issues that impact the well-being and development of a community. It is a dynamic, in other words, a two-way interaction that goes beyond simply informing or consulting the community. it involves empowering community members to take an active role in decision-making, planning, and implementing solutions that affect their lives. https://lnkd.in/e3485vfT

The Spectrum of Community Engagement to Ownership I discovered that the Spectrum of Community Engagement framework is highly beneficial and efficient. The Spectrum of Community Engagement, developed by the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2), is a widely used framework designed to assist with the selection of the level of participation that defines the public’s role in any community engagement program. The Spectrum describes five general modes of public participation that fall on a progressive continuum of increasing public influence over decision-making in a community -engagement process. These modes are: Informing: Providing the public with balanced and objective information to assist them in understanding the problem, alternatives, opportunities, and solutions. Consulting: Obtaining public feedback on analysis, alternatives, and decisions. Involving: Working directly with the public throughout the process to ensure that public concerns and aspirations are consistently understood and considered. Collaborating: Partnering with the public in each aspect of the decision, including the development of alternatives and the identification of the preferred solution. Empowering: Placing final decision-making in the hands of the public. The Spectrum shows that differing levels of participation are legitimate depending on the goals, time frames, resources, and levels of concern in the decision to be made1. It sets out the promise being made to the public at each participation level Source- This tool was developed by Rosa González of Facilitating Power, in collaboration with Movement Strategy Center, in part drawing on content from a number of public participation tools, including Arnstein’s Ladder of Citizen Participation and the Public Participation Spectrum created by the International Association for Public Participation.
